Referred from here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/243355/getting-redirected-in-google-searches/ ~ OB

I had some issues with malware and Virtumonde many many months ago (at least six) and thought I had gotten rid of it all. Then I ended up not using my laptop for several months and when I turned it back on things seemed normal, but I quickly started to notice signs of trouble. Pages started getting redirected, pop-ups advertising anti-virus software, pop-ups from the taskbar telling me my virus was infected, and so on. What really frightened me was, within one day of having turned on my computer and not having visited any websites that I would consider potentially dangerous (wikipedia, my gmail account, and some websites on teaching english as a second language), firefox slowed down to a crawl (everything else was fine) and all of a sudden the computer BSOD'd, shut off, and refused to restart. I ended up loading an old System Restore point and being able to reboot, but of course my laptop was in bad shape. After running scans on all the anti-virus/anti-spyware software I had installed, I had a fun time trying to keep my computer on long enough to update any of the programs. Anyway, I think I've gotten it at least somewhat "stable", as in my computer doesn't appear to be on the verge of crashing anymore.

My current symptoms are:
-Firefox sometimes will slow down, but usually after running some scans and restarting it is fixed.
-Clicking on the links to many of my searches in Google will send me to a different site (often blocked by Firefox or Avast), sometimes it just sends me back to google.com with a URL like this:
http://www.google.com/webhp?sa=t&ct=res&cd=2&ved=undefined&url=http://www.mexonline.com/revolution.htm&ei=2TBmSrSPJ4isswO-sdHoDg&usg=AFQjCNHOJo-nFkfn3gpPFC7cPLRZvkMsrw

Ok, sorry it took so long to respond but I didn't have access to the internet the past week. Anyway, here are the logs you requested and thanks a lot for helping me out (or at the very least taking the time to try and do so :thumbup2: )!
(EDIT: Oh, and the log is from the 9th, when I updated and ran a full scan. I haven't had my computer turned on or connected to the Internet after that point 'til now).

Hi chickendude,

I do see a few baddies in your logs, lets do another check to see if their are any rootkits hiding in there.

Download the HostsXpert
  • Unzip HostsXpert 3.7 - Hosts File Manager to a convenient folder such as C:\HostsXpert
  • Click HostsXpert.exe to Run HostsXpert 3.7 - Hosts File Manager from its new home
  • Click "Make Hosts Writable?" in the upper right corner (If available).
  • Click Restore Microsoft's Hosts file and then click OK.
  • Click the X to exit the program.
  • Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.
Next

We need to scan for Rootkits with GMER
  • Please download GMER from one of the following locations, and save it to your desktop:
    • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
    • Zip Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs, as this process may crash your computer.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security program drivers will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double click on Gmer to run it.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • You may see a rootkit warning window, If you do, click No.
  • Click on Posted Image and wait for the scan to finish.
  • If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • Push Posted Image and save the logfile to your desktop.
  • Copy and Paste the contents of that file in your next post.

Then please post back with the Gmer log and a new Rsit log.

Thanks

Thanks for the quick response! When I returned after starting the GMER scan it said something along the lines of "scan has been stopped". Is this what it says when it's over or did something cause it to terminate early (perhaps a key was pressed)?
Here are the logs I have:

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan/Rootkit.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:
How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you decide you want to proceed with trying to clean your machine please follow these next steps.

Peer-to-Peer Programs Warning
Your log shows that you are using so called peer-to-peer or file-sharing programs (in your case emule and vuse). These programs allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world cyber crime has come to an enormous dimension and any means is used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of the malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it.

It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care. Some further readings on this subject, along the included links, are as follows: File-Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer and Risks of File-Sharing Technology.

It is also important to note that sharing entertainment files and proprietary software infringes the copyright laws in many countries over the world and you are putting yourself at risk of being indicted through organizations watching over the rights of the authors of such files (i.e. the RIAA for music files, or the MPAA for movie files in the USA) or the authors of the files themselves.

Naturally there are also legal ways to use these services, such as downloading Linux distributions or office suites such as "Open Office."

It is your decision whether or not you wish to keep your program(s). However, please refrain from using them until your computer has been declared clean.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed, click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Alright, thanks. I think I'm just going to re-install some Linux distribution, but I do have a few questions. Would it be safe to back-up the files I'd like to keep/transfer them to the my installation?
