Howdy,

This problem sprang up yesterday. Whenever I try to open a new tab the computer hangs up. Whenever I click on a link that someone has included in their post the computer hangs up.

In either case it takes about a minute or so for the web page to appear. I can switch from tab to tab with no problem. I have no problem refreshing a page.

Very odd.

I have updated and ran the following scans to try to exclude malware as the source of the problem. All scans came up clean.

Windows One Care, MBAM, SAS, Bit Defender and Kaspersky.

Any help would be appreciated !

Dennis

Windows XP Home, IE-8, SP-3

Have you tried/considered...simply uninstalling/reinstalling your browser?

Have you tried/considered...trying a different browser, in addition to the one you currently use...so that you can determine if it's a browser situation or a network situation?

No to both questions. I never even thought of it.

I use IE as my browser. How do I uninstall it and reinstall it ?

This situation just popped up a couple of days ago.

I went to my add/remove program and uninstalled a couple of items that I never have used. (Open Office, and 1 other)

When I clicked on remove I got a screen that said something like " others are logged on and this program may not be fully removed succesfully". It then gave me the choice to log off the other user or to continue. I choose continue.

I got this same screen for both items I wanted to remove. Do you think this could be the source of my hang up problem ?

Thanks for your reply and help hamluis.

Hello,

IE8 isn't yet compatible with most websites, which is probably why it hangs up

To uninstall and reinstall:

See:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700/en-us
"How do I uninstall or remove Internet Explorer 8?"
When you remove Internet Explorer 8, your earlier version of Internet Explorer is restored with your customizations (such as add-ins, Favorites, and your home page).

Then reinstall IE8.
Please read and follow carefully:
"HOW TO solve IE8 installation problems":
http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums...10-84185dccf887

I, personally, would go back to using IE7 because it's compatible with at least 98.9% of all websites on the web.

Thanks you for your reply.

I have had IE-8 installed for about a month. This is first problem I have had since I installed it.

The sites I go to are ones that I have in "My Favorites" like Bleeping Computer. Up until 2 days a go everything was fine.

As an example of what is going on, it took about about 2 minutes for the page to appear when I clicked on the Microsoft link you provided.

I will try the uninstall/reinstall IE-8 fix and see what happens.

Thanks again.

IMO, IE8 is not the problem...I've had IE8 installed for several months with no recognizable problems of any sort.

Your current browser...regardless of name or version...might be damaged, which is why I suggested the uninstall/reinstall. In the time that I've had at least one computer...the uninstall/reinstall routine is still the easiest/fastest technique for correcting/overcoming problems which probably result from corruption.

I removed IE-8 and I am now using IE-7. The problem still exits.

Should I install IE-8 and see what happens ?

Can't hurt.

You might take a look at a few of the links at http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=s...mp;oq=&aqi=

I have installed IE-8. The problem still persists.

I will look at the links you have provided hamluis and see if I can find a fix.

If not, I suppose I am just going to have learn to live with this situation.

Thanks for your help.
