Hi, I have an XP SP3 machine that was recently infected with a few trojans and malware (my teenage kids). I *think* it has all been removed now but I still have the initial problem that got me looking at this computer in the first place - the Windows Installer service is not working correctly. I can't remove some applications found in Add/Remove Programs because of this. Also I can't run Windows Update with IE. It tries to register the files needed and fails by doing this over and over again and never getting beyond the initial steps.

Also I tried running SFC /SCANNOW and get an error message about missing files and wanted me to insert the XP CD. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not if SP3 has been installed. Should I go ahead and let SFC try to make corrections or are there other steps I should take first?
