Originally, I was getting (and still getting) the userinit.exe application error. The data Execution Program also comes up after cancelling the userinit.exe error.
I began running antivirus software to remove any potential viruses. This is when I realized I couldn't access sites such as Bitdefender, Symantec, etc. I had read months ago that the Conficker virus would prevent updating antivirus and accessing Microsoft and antivirus software sites. I followed the directions for removing the Downadup and Conficker virus from the bleepingcomputer.com site. I downloaded and installed the MS08-067 Patch and ran the removal tool. The program states the system is clean. The next step was to proceed to post logs from the DDS program. I've downloaded and ran the DDS program. The DDS.txt and Attach.txt files are attached.

Thank you, in advance, for any help.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

regards, Elise

Hello.

It seems you are infected with the file infector Virut. Those .tmp files and the reader_s.exe indicates it.

I would like you to still scan a few of the files please.

Scanning Files with Online Scanner

Please go to: VirusTotal
  • On the page you'll find a "Browse" button.
  • Next to the browse button you'll see a box to enter text.
  • Please copy/paste the following in BOLD:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe
  • Then click the "Send File " button just below.
  • This will scan the file. Please be patient.
  • If the file is analyzed before click Reanalyse file now button.
  • Wait until the file is analyzed.
  • Once scanned, save (copy and paste) the results.
  • Please repeat the process for the following files:
    • C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\lsass.exe
    • C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe
    • C:\Windows\System32\userinit.exe
  • Go back and post the results in your topic for review.
I would also, like you to run a GMER scan.

Download and Run Scan with GMER

We will use GMER to scan for rootkits. This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop. Unzip/extract the file to its own folder. (Click here for information on how to do this if not sure. Win 2000 users click here.
  • Close any and all open programs, as this process may crash your computer.
  • Double click Posted Image or Posted Image on your desktop.
  • When you have done this, close all running programs.
There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
  • Double-click on Gmer.exe to start the program. Right-click and select Run As Administrator... if you are using Vista
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
If it detects rootkit activity, you will receive a prompt (refer below) to run a full scan. Click NO..
    Posted Image
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Please UNCHECK the following:
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Registry
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show all (Don't miss this one!)
  • Click on Posted Image and wait for the scan to finish.
  • If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • Push Posted Image and save the logfile to your desktop.
  • Copy and Paste the contents of that file in your next post.

If GMER doesn't work in Normal Mode try running it in Safe Mode

Note: Do Not run any program while GMER is running
*Note*: Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any actions on "<--- ROOKIT" entries

~Extremeboy
Note: Please do not PM me asking for help, instead please post it in the correct forum requesting for help. Help requests via the PM system will be ignored.

If I'm helping you and I don't reply within 48 hours please feel free to send me a PM.

The help you receive here is always free but if you wish to show your appreciation, you may wish to Posted Image.

Thank you for the reply.
However, at this time, I am getting so many Application Errors, it is hard to maneuver around then to accomplish anything.
I am also unable to get an internet connection... my wireless connection (icon) has also disappeared.

I will work on it a bit.
If I'm unable to get a connection to perform the online scans, I will have to reinstall.

Thanks,
J

Hello.

Yes, that may be a very good idea here. From the symptoms and some of the indications, it appears you have the Virut file infector. :thumbup2:

Posted ImageVirut File Infector Warning

Your system is infected with a polymorphic file infector called Virut and also has IRC bot functionality. Virut is capable of infecting all the machine's executable files (.exe) and screensaver files (.scr) and also web pages (.html and .htm). However, the problem is that the virus has a number of bugs in its code, and as a result, it may misinfect a proportion of executable files and therefore, the files are corrupted beyond repair. In addition, when it infects, sometimes it will destroy the file it tries to latch onto.

For these reasons, you really can't truly fix Virut. You will need to reinstall and format the operating system on this machine. As of now, security experts suggest that a clean Reformat is the only way to clean the infection and it is the only way to return the machine to its normal working state.

Backup all your documents and important items (personal data, work documents, pictures etc..) only. DO NOT backup any executable files (softwares) and screensavers (*.scr) or any web pages (*.html or *.htm). It attempts to infect any accessed .exe or .scr or .html/.htm files by appending itself to the executable.

Also, try to avoid backing up compressed files (zip/cab/rar) files that have .exe or .scr files inside them. Virut can penetrate and infect .exe files inside compressed files too.

More information on Virut can be found over here and here
