Posted 24 July 2009 - 12:01 PM

My WinXP Pentium IV computer contracted msa.exe yesterday. I ran CyberScrub and AVG.

CyberScrub pointed to a recent large number of javascripts recently downloaded, so I removed the Javascript environment with Add/Remove programs.

Task manager showed uninvited iexplorer.exe and msa.exe sessions, so I delete them every few minutes, and I disconnect the network, when I do not need it. In these situations I disconnect from the wireless LAN and restart.

I also downloaded Mozilla Firefox and set it to be the default browser. I used Add/Remove programs to "disable" IE iexplorer.exe. (Of course that does not really work. The process still starts every few minutes.)

Then I spoke with friends who advised Avast! in lieu of AVG. So I downloaded Avast! set it as my default. I ran it last night on download and again today as a registered user. It found nothing.

I gambled, downloaded RegCure and started it. I read some posts about it, canceled it, and removed the RegCure folder from C:\Program files.

CNET.com reminded me of your site. So I registered, and here I am. Help!?! Thanks in advance.

Moderator,

You can withdraw my topic -- with my thanks.

After six days of waiting for your response, six days during which I informed myself about malware and the methodologies you would be likely to use, I became proactive.

36 hours later I can report that my computer gives every sign of being malware free. It is now running ESET's NOD 32, which is arguably the world's best av. I now know about, and have used, reliable online testing resources, downloadable av and anti spyware tools, and a number of preventative software packages. I now also know a lot that I needed to know about safe surfing and the importance of upgrades.

I respect and admire the fine work that you are doing. You seem to be short-handed. I wish I could volunteer to help this year. Maybe five years from now, in the retirement I am working so hard to earn, I shall have time to help.

God bless you. You are truly fighting evil.
