At startup a windows file protection message keeps coming up. It prompts for the windows2000 CD. The next reboot the message is back again.
I can't update the OS (Windows 2000) from microsoft site.
I can't install antivirus software. No errors, no event log entries.

Please take a look at this log.
Thank you! for any help you can send on this issue.

Hello steves. There's nothing but a couple of cleanup items that are showing in the log so let's take care of those. They wouldn't be causing any problems like you are describing though.

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O16 - DPF: {1D0D9077-3798-49BB-9058-393499174D5D} - file://c:\counter.cab
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://207.188.7.150/2547f42304aea8694916/...ip/RdxIE601.cab

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

You might try disabling ewido and then doing whatever install the OS wants to do at bootup. If there are registry entries involved ewido might be blocking them.

Otherwise try posting a question in the 2k forum here:

You should also get an anti-virus program on this machine. Here are 3 free ones for home use:Cheers.
