i keep using avast and spybot/antimalware byte and my comp still has problems. xp pro, 20gb free space. another wonderful thing is that my cursor
jumps around when i type, making it really tough to do so. i have recently reinstalled windows. thanks for your help, boyd.

Try running chkdsk on the partition.

Running CHKDSK - http://www.1securitycenter.com/windows_xp_faq/chkdsk.html

Put check marks in both options presented (Automatically fix...scan for).
