I have been having alot of trouble with my computer for the past week. It first started when I ran a defrag on the computer (running Windows XP SP2). Everything seemed ok until a few days later when I could no longer play any audio files (WAV. MP3) etc without the computer automatically restarting. I started to uninstall programs I had recently installed to try to solve the problem. Then, Windows would not boot and I received the error message saying that the boot.ini file was corrupt and that there was an error in the system32/hal.dll
After that, I adjusted the boot ini file in safe mode and then did a repair of Windows. OK, the computer seemed alright for one day. Then my external sound card (Edirol FA-101) is no longer working. When I try to install the drivers, the computer restarts. I looked in device manager and one entry (Microsoft Kernel DLS Synthesizer) has an exclamation mark with the message "Windows cannot load driver because duplicate in use. Code 42) I can't seem to install any other drivers onto my system either. Long winded story but can anyone help?
