I joined these forums specifically for this problem.
My computer has suddenly decided that I am not allowed to use .dat files anymore. I can't edit, move or delete them anymore. Any attempt to do so returns a "Access Denied" error. I can still look at the contents of the files (through notepad) and programs can still use them.
The strange thing about this is that I am an administrator on this computer and have full-control ownership of the files.
I suspect that maybe a recent windows update or a security program has decided to block any editing of any files with the .dat extention (Maybe as a way to protect system files of the same extention?). This means any, and ALL .dat files, even empty junk ones I create myself.
However, these particular .dat files are used in a game that I am programming, and are not in themselves important to the system. This problem is getting in the way of my progress in programming.
Also, I can copy the files to a seperate directory, but then I cannot delete them. This is leading to them building up and taking up space.
Installed security programs are:
AVG anti-virus 8
Windows firewall (not used)
I am running windows XP media centre edition.
I will be happy to provide any more information if it is needed.
Thanks in advance.
