Hi everybody!

I've been trying to figure out a problem on my girlfriends laptop for some time now but I haven't found the reason for why it acts as it does. Therefore, I'm now hoping for a little assistance from the champs of this site :-)

Problem: For no apparent reason the HD of the laptop, an Acer Aspire 5052 running Vista Home Basic (1GB, 120GBHD), starts working excessively, making the the computer slower and slower for in the end to ... well... crash and restart. :-|

I've been trying several angles to find/solve the problem:
* Turning off applications that are not needed via msconfig
* Using SpyBot SD to check and fix the system.
* Made full scans with AVG free antivirus.
Furthermore, I've turned off and uninstalled toolbars and such other stuff she might have gotten by downloading software (Yahoo toolbar etc.) Basically, I've tried as much as I can to bring the computer to a "zen" state with nothing else but necessary things on it ;-)

Nevertheless, without any warning, the HD sometimes just starts crunching and renders the laptop unusable. I've tried to wait it out, to see if whatever task its performaning might come to an end, but after 45 mins of waiting we went out to take a coffee. When we came back, the computer had restarted! In other words, when left to run to the end it seems to swamp itself until it commits harakiri! Normally we get impatient before that and just turn off the laptop the hard way :-)

When it started crunching earlier today, I had the time to download Process Monitor and start it up. I had hoped to see what process that was causing the HD activity, but apparently the events were to many (or the computer was getting close to being swamped), that the grid in Process Monitor frose and showed nothing. I've rechecked the filters, and it should have shown something!

As you can see I'm shooting in the dark. I have no direct indication of whether this is a hardware / Vista issue or if the computer is part of some bot-network helping to attack servers in countries far far away. I therefore start by posting it here, and if it cannot be helped by you guys here, I'll move the discussion to a malware group. On a sidenote, my girlfriend did use eMule in short period of time and have had a trojan. But that was removed by AVG. Since then, nothing of that sort.

Thank you so much in advance,
Christer & Lydia

PS. I have quite long experience with computers in general, and you can reply to me in fairly technical terms.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.
