I am experiencing issues where my computer randomly reboots at any time. This problem has been going on for about the last week. It reboots without warning and sometimes stops in the middle of booting up altogether. The computer manages to remain on without issue sometimes for a few hours, but more often only a few minutes. I tried booting into safe mode and it still occurs there as well. Basically this computer just continues to switch off no matter what mode or point in the booting up process.

When I first discovered this problem I immediately thought of viruses or other potential malware issues. I run scans every couple of weeks so my computer is generally in a healthy state. I ran them again and was informed of no viruses and only tracking cookies as far as potential malware threats go. I fixed all of those minor issues and scanned again and nothing came up.

I next went to check the temperature of my computer thinking it could be overheating. Through speedfan I got temperatures that are very normal in the 35C to 40C range depending on what Iím doing. I have checked the fans and they all seem to be working properly. I clean the inside of the computer every couple of months like recommended as well.

I have also checked the drivers in device manager to make sure they are all up to date and see no indication that there is a problem there. They all seem to be working properly. I did not install any new devices or programs prior to this either. I have also gone to My Computer and made sure that automatic restart is unchecked in order to give me the blue screen of death message and it was. There are some errors in the event viewer, which is an area that I am not very familiar with.

Basically Iíve done about everything that I know to do to try and diagnose this issue and Iím not sure where to go. I figured I should start back at the beginning with a potential virus or something I might have missed. Iíd like to determine if the issue is hardware, which is something I canít fix myself, or if Iím overlooking something.

Since it was advised to me to place this DDS log here it is as follows. Iím leaning towards this not being a virus or any kind of malware, but thatís always the first place to start. Any help would be appreciated.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

The issues I've been having above still persist. There isn't really much to add since my first post other than to say again that this is a random issue with no pattern. Sometimes it reboots over and over again and sometimes it goes hours with no problems.

Below I will post the requested logs

Hi Rian,

Well, there's nothing jumping out at me in your logs and the symptoms could well be a system error but let's make sure before we send you to another forum.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application or, if you are using Vista, right-click and select Run As Administrator on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

Then

We Need to check for Rootkits with RootRepeal
  • Download RootRepeal from the following location and save it to your desktop:
  • Extract RootRepeal.exe from the zip archive.
  • Open Posted Image on your desktop.
  • Click the Posted Image tab.
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Check all six boxes: Posted Image
  • Push Ok
  • Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:), and press Ok.
  • Allow RootRepeal to run a scan of your system. This may take some time.
  • Once the scan completes, push the Posted Image button. Save the log to your desktop, using a distinctive name, such as RootRepeal.txt. Include this report in your next reply, please.
Then finally

We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from the mirror:
    [http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe]This is THE Mirror
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
OTListIt.txt <-- Will be opened
    Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
Thanks :thumbup2:

I was able to do the malwarebytes scan and I'll post that below, but I had an issue with the RootRepeal one so that's as far as I got. The RootRepeal scan stopped responding and was stuck on the "Initializing, please wait" screen. I tried it several times and I just couldn't get past that point for some reason. I looked around the forum and noticed a couple of other people had issues with this.

The Malwarebytes log is as follows.

Yes it appears that Gmer and RootRepeal are being targeted by malware and are crashing.

We need to run Combofix.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop but rename it Combo-Fix.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Okay, Combofix has removed a couple of worms.

We need to do an online scan.

Please run a BitDefender Online Scan
  • Click I Agree to agree to the EULA.
  • Allow the ActiveX control to install when prompted.
  • Click Click here to scan to begin the scan.
  • Please refrain from using the computer until the scan is finished. This might take a while to run, but it is important that nothing else is running while you scan.
  • When the scan is finished, click on Click here to export the scan results.
  • Save the report to your desktop so you can post it in your next reply.
Thanks :thumbup2:

Hi Rian,

BitDefender only found virus activity in the restore folder and that will be going before we finish.

Are you still suffering any problems with the PC?

The logs are showing clean now so it looks like a hardware issue.

We should clean up before you try another forum.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

If you are using Firefox and this has caused page loading problems then please clear your private data. To do this go
to the Tools menu, select Clear Private Data, and then check Cache. Click Clear Private Data Now.

Then close Firefox and then reopen it.

Please also clear out the old Java versions on your PC, they can still be used to gain access to your computer by malware. JavaRa below can do this automatically for you.

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.
Finally, let's repair any files that may have been damaged.

We need to run a system file check.

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow

More info on this process can be found here.

Please post back with the results.

I have completed those tasks with no incident. ATF cleared out a small amount of files. My JRE was already up to date, but all the old ones were removed. I had no issues with scannow either, as it just went right on through with no issues.
