Hi all.

I have used this forum before for problems I have had with my own PC and programmes to download to help clean up my system removing malware, adware and spyware. Also helping prevent these infecting my system in the future.

I have been informed of a probelm on my fathers PC and am turning to this forum for help.

Upon boot up he receives the error message windows can't find C:\windows\nail.exe The boot up then proceeds as normal, but the error message is rather tedious. any ideas on what to do to remove/fix this?

I would also like someone to have a look at the hijackThis log and give me some helpful tips on what to do to make his system clean and keep it clean in the future.
I have installed Hijack this onto his system and given it it's own file on the C: drive. Please find a log below.

Many Thanks in advance

Hi thistle and welcome to Bleeping.

To easily keep a track of this topic, please click on My Control Panel (beneath the main 'Discussions' tab at the top of the forum).
Select Email Settings from the menu down the left hand side and checkmark the box beside Enable 'Email Notification' by default? under the 'Board Preferences' section. Then click the Amend my email settings button.

Please keep ALL your replies in this thread so we don't lose each other and don't reply to your own post in case it cancels the email notification!

Before I post a full fix for you can you please tell me whether Bearshare on your fathers machine is the free or paid for version.

Then give me a HijackThis Uninstall list.
Open HijackThis
Click 'Config' (bottom right)
Click 'Misc Tools'
Click 'Open Unistall Manager'
A list of the entries in Add/remove programs will appear.
Click on Save List...
The list will be saved as 'Uninstall_list.txt'
Copy & Paste the contents in your next reply.

Hi John_McKenna thanks for your swift response, I won't be so impatient from now on, it's just every night I get my dad coming home from work asking "is it fixed yet?!" and it all gets rather tedious.

Anyway, the bearshare that used to be installed on my dads PC was the free version, however I uninsalled it some time ago when I realised that it came accompanied by a lot of spy/adaware. I checked on my add/remove programmes list and it doesn't appear to be there anymore, so I must have removed it?

here is the list you requested

many thanks in advance

Step 1

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite from here. Install it and update the program with the latest definitions. Setup the program following the instructions here and then close it without running a scan. We'll use it in Safe Mode.

Please download Nailfix from here.
Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Step 2

Reboot into Safe Mode and double-click Nailfix.cmd.
A window should open and close very quickly (this is normal).

Step 3

Then please run Ewido security suite, and perform a full system scan.
Remove anything found, and save the logfile from the scan, I'll ask you to post it here for me later.

Step 4

Then click on Start | Run and type cleanmgr into the run box.
Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin ONLY are checkmarked and click 'OK'.
Then click on Start | Run, and type %temp% and press the ok button.
This will open up the temp directory that your machine uses.
Please delete all files that are found there.

Step 5

Run HijackThis again and place a check before the following entries (if still present):

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
O2 - BHO: MyWebSearch Search Assistant BHO - {00A6FAF1-072E-44cf-8957-5838F569A31D} - C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\SrchAstt\1.bin\MWSSRCAS.DLL

O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe (file missing)

Close ALL OPEN WINDOWS except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Step 6

Delete these folders:

C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch
C:\Program Files\BearShare

Restart your computer in normal mode and post a fresh HijackThis log and Ewido log.

Ok. I have followed your steps, as requested, all went to plan except for on section 5. When I had all of the remaining entries checked and clicked on 'Fix Checked', I was presented with the following error message on 3 occasions.

Unexpected error occurred!
Error #52 (Bad file name or number) in Sub GetLongPath(?.exe).

Please send a report to merijn@spywareinfo.com, mentioning what you were doing, and what version of Windows you have.

This message has been copied to your clipboard.

I don't know whether or not all of the entries will have been fixed? One the other hand the error message for the nail.exe no longer appears on boot up, which will please my father.

Please find below a fresh HijackThis log Followed by a Ewido log (I'm guessing you want the log that I saved when I ran a full scan, rather than a fresh one?) Please find the one from after the scan, if I need to run a fresh one, can you let me know in your reply?

Many Thanks

Looks like we got them all. Just fix this one with HJT that I missed earlier:

O16 - DPF: {FFFF0003-0001-101A-A3C9-08002B23E0CC} - http://direct.data-line.us/gbn298.exe

Then run two online virus scans from any of the following locations:

Kasperskey Online
RAV Online
Trend Micro (Europe)

Reboot once more, post a fresh log and let me know how the scans went.

Is there any software that you recommend that I could install on this PC (I already have ad-aware SE installed) to prevent this from happening in the future?

Once again many thanks for all your prompt and polite advice.

You're welcome thistle, I'm glad I could help.

Now that you're clean again, please follow these simple steps to keep yourself safe and secure in the future.

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and renable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to disable and renable system restore here:

Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

or

Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from the tutorial above.

Install IE-SpyAd if you intend to use Internet Explorer in the future.

Finally, and definitely the MOST IMPORTANT step, click on the following tutorial and follow each step listed there:
