Hello good people,

I seek your help for a problem I just can't get rid of.

First, I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition.

The first problem I noticed was that my web searches (in both Firefox, my primary browser, and IE) were being redirected--to ad sites, a porn site, a "you have malware, download this software now!!!" site, etc. Firefox (and my computer in general, come to think of it) has been running slow for some time, but yesterday was the first day I noticed this search/redirect problem, and I search a lot, so if it had been happening before then, I would have noticed.

Second problem I noticed was that my security software (Panda Internet Security 2009) wasn't running. I started it and several of its services were disabled (firewall most notably). I had to turn on Windows firewall then disable that to get the Panda firewall to turn on. This happened a couple of times through the night as I ran different scans and restarted the computer.

I ran the Panda system scan... It came up with the usual cookies, plus: trj/sinowal.gen, trj/Banbra.GIY, said that phishing was detected, and found a "hacking tool," Exploit/Pedief, which scares the heck out of me. (I stayed up all night changing passwords on online accounts--on another computer of course). All were deleted by Panda.

I downloaded Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware. Ran that, deleted whatever bad files it found (sorry, it was late, I don't remember what it found), restarted, ran again, found nothing.

I downloaded SuperAntiSpyware, ran that, deleted whatever it found, turned off the computer for the night. Ran it again this morning, deleted whatever it found (only cookies second time around...again, don't remember what it found first time, it was late).

This morning, I started the computer and Panda turned on as it was supposed to, and all services were enabled. However, in looking at the settings for "identity protection," the phishing protection was disabled--and I'm pretty sure I had that box checked for "on" last night. I re-enabled it.

Running Panda scan again right now and so far it's finding nothing.

Web searches are still being redirected.

Decided to download Hijackthis and ask you kind people for help. Here are my logs (scan log and startup list log).

Thank you so very much for any help you can give.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine.  Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links.  Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool.  No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note:  You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run.  After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection.  Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.
