I have windows xp, home. The problem seems to have started when I uninstalled AGV and reinstalled a newer version. My computer takes for ever to boot up (10-15min). I canít run disk defragmenter or try to restore to an earlier restore point. It seems like weird things are taking place like email address disappearing. I all of a sudden have two DVD writers Show up Under My Computer. When I only actually have one. And none of my programs will acknowledge my DVD writer (windows medial player ECT.) I can play a disk on it but I canít use it in conjunction with any program to burn, they all say I donít have a DVD player/burner. Iíve tried to update the firm ware but it also does not recognize the DVD drive. I use Google chrome and explorer and when I try to use the search engine it redirects me to different types of search engines. And my computer seems real slow. I have two hard drives and neither is full, but I really canít trust what my computer is telling me. Especially since the defragmenter and restorer donít work. Sorry so long, but there was a lot to explain and I still fell like I may have left something out.

Hello ,try running this Unistaller reboot and reinstall//
AVG Remover Utility:
ē32-bit
http://www.avg.com/filedir/util/avg_arm_su.../avgremover.exe
ē64-bit avgremoverx64.exe
http://www.avg.com/filedir/util/avg_arv_su...gremoverx64.exe

Let's also check First that ther is not other malware at play

Next run ATF:
Note: On Vista, "Windows Temp" is disabled. To empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator".

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune & save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • If you use Firefox browser click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • If you use Opera browser click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Next run MBAM (MalwareBytes):

NOTE: Before saving MBAM please rename it to zztoy.exe....now save it to your desktop.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

I see that you also posted for assistance here. Please follow boopme's instructions. Do not start new threads or duplicate topics as this causes confusion and makes it more difficult to get the help you need to resolve your issues.

I tried both the ATF Cleaner and the Malwarebytes anti malwware. The ATF Cleaner Just closed after I clicked the empty selected button. I took a look at some of the folders like recycle and temp. I even put a file in the recycle bin and ran it again. The file was still there and the temp folder still had about 10 files left in it. But I dont know what it looked like b4. As for the Malwarebytes anti malware it just shut down. I ran it about 3 more times on the 3rd time I got the windows error report window and this is where the malwarebytes stopped. - 3minute and 44 seconds. it had scanned 28161 items found 2 infected items. And was stoped on c/document settings\local service.nt authority.001\local setting\temp\temporary internet files\content.ie5\hrwqbmze\desktop.ini. The 4th time thru its just closed like the first two times I ran It. As far as other post on other sites your are the only instructions I have followed per\quietman7

Hmmm let's see if there is a rootkit in the way.
Next Please install RootRepeal
Note: Vista users ,, right click on desktop icon and select "Run as Administrator."

Go HERE, and download RootRepeal.zip to your Desktop.
Tutorial with images ,if needed >> L@@K.
Unzip that,(7-zip tool if needed) and then click RootRepeal.exe to open the scanner.
Next click on the Report tab, now click on Scan. A Window will open asking what to include in the scan. Check all of the below and then click OK.

Drivers
Files
Processes
SSDT
Stealth Objects
Hidden Services

Now you'll be asked which drive to scan. Check C: and click OK again and the scan will start. Please be patient as the scan runs. When the scan has finished, click on Save Report.
Name the log RootRepeal.txt and save it to your Documents folder (it should automatically save it there).
Please copy and paste that into your next reply.

Ok !! This was good...
Now the next step...

Rerun Rootrepeal. After the scan completes, go to the files tab and find these files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\hjgruiawulxjmf.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hjgruiiemljhmv.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\hjgruittymymkk.sys

Then use your mouse to highlight it in the Rootrepeal window.
Next right mouse click on it and select *wipe file* option only.
Then immediately reboot the computer.

Rerun MBAM like this:

Open MBAM in normal mode and click Update tab, select Check for Updates, when done
click Scanner tab, select Quick scan and scan.
After scan click Remove Selected, Post new scan log and Reboot into normal mode.

Ok, now we've kicked butt.. Let's get any stragglers..
Please download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If it will not start, go to Start > All Prgrams > SUPERAntiSpyware and click on Alternate Start.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here. Double-click on the hyperlink for Download Installer and save SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to your desktop. Then double-click on SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to install the definitions.)
  • In the Main Menu, click the Preferences... button.
  • Click the "General and Startup" tab, and under Start-up Options, make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.
  • Click the "Scanning Control" tab, and under Scanner Options, make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program.
  • Do not run a scan just yet.
Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with SUPERAntiSpyware as follows:
  • Launch the program and back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan and click "Next".
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.

How is it running now?

Its running great. It boots up right away and windows open and close propmtly with out a 1 min delay. Google search is also working and I was even able to watch yahoo news on the apollo 11. I still dont have burn capabilities, but Ill work on that later. Thanks you've been a great help and very patient! Thanks! One question? If I remove these icon (MBAM,RootRepeal,ZZToy,AFT Cleaner) from my desk top will that erase the programs from the desktop folder and computer all together or will I still have the programs in the destop folder? Okay one more question is it possible that i release these viruses fron agv when I uninstalled it or where do you think I picked them up from and so they have a name

Im sure AVG offer to allow you to keep the Virus Vault or delete the Virus Vault along with its contents

Also, It wont delete them if you take off your desktop ;)

Hi that's great news. That will work for (RootRepeal,ZZToy,AFT Cleaner)
Mbam needs to be uninstalled using it's uninstaller in All Programs or thru Control Panel's add / Remove.

Okay one more question is it possible that i release these viruses fron agv when I uninstalled it or where do you think I picked them up from and so they have a name.
When you Un installed they were removed not released.
How Did I Get Infected?

Now you should Create a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been backed up, renamed and saved in System Restore. Since this is a protected directory your tools cannot access to delete these files, they sometimes can reinfect your system if you accidentally use an old restore point. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name, then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Then use Disk Cleanup to remove all but the most recently created Restore Point.
  • Go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
  • Click "Ok". Disk Cleanup will scan your files for several minutes, then open.
  • Click the "More Options" tab, then click the "Clean up" button under System Restore.
  • Click Ok. You will be prompted with "Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?"
  • Click Yes, then click Ok.
  • Click Yes again when prompted with "Are you sure you want to perform these actions?"
  • Disk Cleanup will remove the files and close automatically.
Vista Users can refer to these links: Create a New Restore Point and Disk Cleanup.

After running the super Anti Spywae as per your instructions I clicked on preferences then the statistics/Logs tab but I did not find the SUPERAntiSpywae Scan Log button and nothing happened when I clicked on veiw log.

I have created a new restore point and performed the disk clean up. Should I now go back to your first post on the agv or do you recommend a different anti virus? And I think you misunerstood my first question about removing the program. I want to keep them, just no on my desk top screen. I dont like the clutter. Thanks once again!
