Hello, there.

First thing you should know is this is a work PC. I don't exactly know how this PC got infected, since I started this job last week, but I left McAfee running on Friday and when I came in on Monday the PC was off. After turning on the PC and noticing absolutely no change in it (it was running seriously slow) I decided to look at the McAfee log and noticed it highlighted 2 viruses and decided to google them (which took about 30 minutes for Firefox to actually open) and follow a guide. I proceeded to do so and now the PC runs fast and I can do my work. Problem now is that while using Firefox I get random popups while the popup blocker is enabled and it only happens on this computer (I use 3 different computers on a daily basis). I'm guessing that I probably missed another virus and thus require your invaluable help. Below is the McAfee and DDS logs (I cannot run Kaspersky because Firefox crashes and I cannot disable McAfee before doing so because, even though I'm running this PC as Administrator, there's just no option to disable it and I can't even end the process). Thanks in advance for any help you can offer me.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Sorry for the delayed response. As I said in my first post, this is a work computer and I just got access to it today (was a holiday weekend).

I seem to have fixed the pop-up problem I had but the PC still runs slow (though not as slow as before). It takes several minutes to finish loading when I turn it on. Below is the updated DDS log. Thanks.

Hi ebilkitteh,

You say that this is a work computer, do you not have an IT department that should be dealing with this?

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan/Rootkit.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:
How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you decide you want to proceed with trying to clean your machine please follow these next steps.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed, click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Hi ebilkitteh,

You say that this is a work computer, do you not have an IT department that should be dealing with this?

Yes, but I was hoping it wasn't that serious and I could find help and do it myself (not to mention the fact that the PC had been like that for a long time, before I came to work here, and no one had done anything including some of the IT people that occasionally used it or were asked for some help).

I was going to run ComboFix but, even though I run this PC as Admin., I couldn't disable McAfee VirusScan Enterprise and I didn't want to damage the PC. So, I printed your post, had someone come down from IT, showed them it and had them take the PC since I couldn't do anything about it.

Thanks a lot for all your help.
