Reposting here per directions. I apologize for not posting to the correct forum in my original post. Thanks for getting me to the right place, and I'm hoping fixing this won't be a major headache for the people helping here.

Per directions, I've backed up files to an external hard drive and have run the DDS program.

What has changed since my first post is that the system seems to have stabilized: a graphics card update has been rolled back to an earlier version, and restart->safe mode->restore point is not necessary to get things going (so far).

I had also run a SuperAntiSpyware scan that found and quarantined: "Trojan.Unclassified C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\MPFSERVICEFAILURECOUNT.TXT"

I still am unable to get a restart of a batch of running processes that are stopped. If I need to post all of them, please say how to do so if there's a way capture the information. If I need to screen-shot & manually entering them item by item, let me know.

The rest of the problems are as previously outlined:

Windows Defender gives the following error message: "Application failed to initialize: 0x800106ba". Looked around on the net and found several command lines to enter to fix it , and none but one took. One other problem is redirects while using Google that throws the search to the images page instead of the web, where the search was initiated. Though it's only an annoyance at this point, considering all the other issues, it's probably symptomatic of a lot worse..

As of last night, McAfee stopped running. I uninstalled and sucessfully reinstalled. It stopped running shortly thereafter. At the same time, Windows Media and software updates have stopped as well. Another headache - well, I find it a headache in general, but that's another story - is AOL. Upon startup, there is a blank rectange about 1/3 of the screen with the notation "CDP1" in the taskbar. It take a lot of clicks to get rid of that. Neither AOL or McAfee is my preference, but the owner uses them. The attached buttons for the owner's account - personal services links & such are inacessible.

The firewall is disabled too. When offered by windows to start it manually, it won't take either.

DDS.txt here. I've been up quite a while, which might account for the following, but I've examined the steps outlined in the "Preparation Guide Guide for Use Before Using HJThis..". There is no "Browse button in the Attachment section of the post." showing on my page here, so I can't upload the Attach.txt (that appears to be a list of utilities) at this point. It might be an artifact of Java not seeming to run, or not run properly - hitting the "BB Code Help" button nets an acknowledgement in the taskbar -"java script:bbc_pop()" . If I need to edit this post to present the information in list form instead of an attachment, please say to do so.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you are able to give.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.
