I am going nuts here. I downloaded a file for work purposes last night & have been having problems ever since. I downloaded a .mov video off of a site. I wasn't able to download it directly, so I used RealPlayer recorder and saved it to my desktop. The file is 164 MB. I haven't been able to open the video with any program (they freeze up when I try). I downloaded the video because I wanted to convert it to an .MP3 so I could transcribe it easier, I was unsuccessful with that.

I can't delete the file. It goes through the motions, saying it is sending to the recycling bin, but it never completes it. I tried going into command prompt and deleting it that way. It shows up in the directory, but when I type the request to delete it, it says the file is not found! I also tried deleting it from the desktop in safe mode. That didn't work either.

I have scanned with McAfee, MalwareBytes, and SuperAntiSpyware. Those haven't picked up anything. I used ATF Cleaner. I did a System Restore, hoping that would solve my problem. That just seemed to make things worse, because now McAfee is disabled for computer & files, it won't fix the protection items because it says some components are missing (this might possibly resolve itself with a reboot, as I have had it do that before). [ --> The McAfee problem has resolved, it needed to download an update and reboot.]
I just need to get rid of this damn file, but anything I try to do with it ends up freezing up. I can't even rename it. Any help greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks,
Lisa

Hello mmmartie and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Hi. I do still need some help, but I'm leaving today and will be away for a week.

I'm not having any major problems except for not being able to remove that icon/file from my desktop. I downloaded the DDS program & I will scan my laptop while I'm gone. I don't think I will have any internet access, so I will have to wait to post the results when I return.

Thanks,
Lisa

Thank you for reminding me! I've been so busy since I got back that I temporarily forgot about it. I am posting the DDS.txt file and attaching the attach.txt as a .zip.

(I know you're going to give me heck for having UTorrent installed, but I when I do use it, I use it carefully & have occasionally used it for work purposes.)

Hi mmmartie,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer. My name is m0le and I will be helping you with your log.
  • Please subscribe to this topic, if you haven't already.

  • Please avoid installing/uninstalling or updating any programs and attempting any unsupervised fixes or scans. This can make helping you impossible.

  • Please reply to this post so I know you are there.
The forum is busy and we need to have replies as soon as possible. If I haven't had a reply after 3 days I will bump the topic and if you do not reply by the following day after that then I will close the topic.

I will be back soon with the first instructions.

Thanks :thumbup2:

Hi mmmartie,

I will let you off the P2P warning :thumbup2: . Be aware that there is no way of using file sharing without risk.

Also noticeable on your log was this:

SP: Spyware Doctor *disabled* (Updated) {1C3EDD79-273E-46ac-99F8-EFA9E7CBC301}
SP: Spybot - Search and Destroy *disabled* (Outdated) {ED588FAF-1B8F-43B4-ACA8-8E3C85DADBE9}
SP: AVG Anti-Spyware *disabled* (Outdated) {48F2E28D-ED66-4646-9C11-B3055B0AF604}
SP: Windows Defender *disabled* (Updated) {D68DDC3A-831F-4FAE-9E44-DA132C1ACF46}
SP: SUPERAntiSpyware *disabled* (Updated) {222A897C-5018-402e-943F-7E7AC8560DA7}

Please leave one and remove the rest. You don't need 5 antispyware programs running on an already resource-heavy operating system.

Can you let me know the name of the file that you cannot delete and also if any of the following steps removed it.

We need to scan for Rootkits with GMER
  • Please download GMER from one of the following locations, and save it to your desktop, please rename it as gamer.exe.
    • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
    • Zip Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Close any and all open programs, as this process may crash your computer.
  • Double click Posted Image or Posted Image on your desktop.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • You may see this window. If you do, click No.
    Posted Image
  • Click on Posted Image and wait for the scan to finish.
  • If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • Push Posted Image and save the logfile to your desktop.
  • Copy and Paste the contents of that file in your next post.

Then

Please download Posted Image Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application or, if you are using Vista, right-click and select Run As Administrator on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

Finally please run this online scanner

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
Okay, let's see what we find.

I haven't had Spyware Doctor, Spybot, or AVG installed on my computer in years! I can't find any remnants of them on my system, but obviously there must be. I am certain that Windows Defender is disabled by default when you have your own protection.

McAfee is my main protection, with Threatfire to complement it. I have the free versions of Malwarebytes & SuperAntiSpyware just to scan with on occasion, as they have picked up things that others haven't. They are not active.

The file that I can't remove is called How To Present BPRs.mov

It says its 164 MB. I had saved it to my desktop so that I could find it quickly, as I intended to do a work sample for a prospective client. I scanned it, it appeared to be clean. I can't do anything with it. I can't open it, I can't delete it, I can't rename it, I can't cut & paste it somewhere else. If I try to delete it, rename it, or move it, it pretends it's going to do it but just hangs there. If I right click on it & click on properties, nothing happens.

I tried going into command prompt, into the desktop directory. The file showed up in tree, but when I tried to delete it that way, it said file not found.

Anyway, I will proceed with the other directions and let you know what happens. I have already scanned with MalwareBytes, but it didn't find anything. I will do another scan though & paste the results.

The Kaspersky Scanner showed no threats.

Here is the MBAM log, which shows nothing. I tried the GMER after closing all apps, but it crashed my computer anyway, so I'll have to try it in safe mode when I can. I may have to wait until tomorrow for the GMER, but I will try to get these done & posted.

I can't get GMER to run. I've tried it several times in normal & several in safe mode. I try to make sure all applications are closed & McAfee is disabled. It starts running but then gives an error message & closes, or it gives me a blue screen message & reboots.

Okay, not a problem.

Can you try and run RootRepeal instead. It's also a rootkit scanner. Gmer seems to be well known to malware writers now and they are blocking it.

We Need to check for Rootkits with RootRepeal
  • Download RootRepeal from the following location and save it to your desktop.

    First Location
    Second Location
    Third Location

  • Open Posted Image on your desktop.
  • Click the Posted Image tab.
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Check all seven boxes: Posted Image
  • Push Ok
  • Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:), and press Ok.
  • Allow RootRepeal to run a scan of your system. This may take some time.
  • Once the scan completes, push the Posted Image button. Save the log to your desktop, using a distinctive name, such as RootRepeal.txt. Include this report in your next reply, please.
Thanks :thumbup2:

All clean, so there's nothing else there. Just a problem file to remove.

Let's try and search for the problem file.

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2
  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    :filefind
    How To Present BPRs
  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Once we find it we'll kill it. :thumbup2:
