Thank you for your time.
During the last couple weeks I've had trouble opening Internet search results. It doesn't seem to matter which search engine I use (yahoo, google, etc) or which browser I use (chrome, IE, etc). I can complete a search and get a list of search results, but when I select any of the results, the page that is opened (usually some sort of solicitation/advertising page) is not what was selected. Sometimes I get a message that the page is no longer available. I can successfully open search results if I right click and open the link in a new window. I use AVG antivirus, Spybot, Ad-Aware, and Windows firewall. All claim to be functioning correctly. Recently, while surfing the Internet, I began to get quite a few spyware-type messages, and then my laptop closed down with a message about the computer being infected with spyware. I scan with Spybot or Ad-Aware (even while in safe-mode), and remove a dozen or more infected files, but this does not ever correct the search engine problem.
Thank you for any help you can provide,
bryan

Hello bdholloman,

Posted Image

I need for you to go offline completely and disable ALL your protective programs after you download ComboFix, but before you run it. Sometimes those programs interfere with it, and we don't want that! :thumbup2:

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Please do this:
1. Download HijackThis™ here:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/th.../hijackthis.php

2. Click 'Do a System Scan and Save log'.
The HJT log will open in notepad.

Thanks,
tea

Thanks for your help, tea. I disabled all my scanners, but when I tried to run the Combofix, I received a message that said the AVG scanner was still active. I tried everything I could think of to disable the program (closed the program at the task tray), even tried to uninstall, but got a message saying it couldn't be uninstalled. Combofix said that if I continued to run its program while the AVG scanner was active, it could damage the computer.
I bow to your expertise. What should I do?
thanks,
bryan

Hi Bryan,

Go ahead and run it. Some AVs are worse than others, and AVG is not a really bad one so it should run all right. :thumbup2:

Hello,

Thanks for that. :thumbup2:

One more download, please :

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from one of these places:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Ant...ware_d5756.html
http://www.besttechie.net/mbam/mbam-setup.exe

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

How is it running now? :)

Thanks,
tea
Please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you.

I ran the Malwarebytes' scan and it said there were no infected files. However, my computer is running fine now and there doesn't seem to be evidence of hijacking. Did this do the trick?
Here's the Malwarebytes' log.

Hello,

Yes, since you ran ComboFix twice, the bad files were likely removed the first time around. Please delete ComboFix and its accompanying folder C:\Qoobox. Empty your Recycle bin and reboot your computer.

If you did not install it knowingly, then please go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall anything to do with Crawler. Reboot after to reset the registry.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)" JRE 6 Update 14.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u14-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
-- If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Below I have included a number of recommendations on how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously! These few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

Regularly go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. You should also turn on the Windows automatic update feature.

You should definitely maintain a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or Outpost. I use Comodo on my own system and really like it. http://comodo.com
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. A lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Please make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

Followed all your recommendation. I typically use Google Chrome as a browser instead of Internet Explorer. Is that any better than IE, or would you still recommend Foxfire? I tried Foxfire a while ago, and didn't really like it, but I could get used to it if it is more secure than Chrome.
Thank you so much for your help. I am typically able to keep my computers clean, but this one had me stumped. I couldn't have done it without your guidance.
thank you,
bryan

Hi Bryan,

You're most welcome. :)

Chrome is fine....but I would still consider installing Firefox for "just in case". There are many times when a system gets infected and one browser is unusable, but another works well enough to get the problem taken care of. So, even if you never use it, it's also a good precaution. :thumbup2:

Best regards,
