A couple of weeks ago, I had the PAV problem. I removed it using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and the popups no longer appear. However, I think there are residual effects. Norton LiveUpdate fails to update, except when I halt a process called "netfilter.exe" . Is that an after-effect of PAV? If so, any help with getting rid of this and other residuals would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

Well the news isn't so great on this one : NetFilter http://www.prevx.com/filenames/X8164414636...FILTER.EXE.html

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

Regards,
tea

Wow.

Okay, this is bad news.

However, if I back up data (documents etc.) can that data be trusted?

I am prepared to reformat if that's what it takes.

Thanks.

Hi there,

Keep only what you cannot replace and be sure to scan it thoroughly before you put it back on a clean system. It'll likely be all right, but as nasty as malware is now I'd much rather have you err on the side of safety, rather than be sorry later. :thumbup2:

Sorry. One last question (I hope).

Dell has a feature called System Restore. It is described by Dell as follows:
Dell PC Restore and Dell Factory Image Restore, restore your computer software to the original state in which it was shipped to you from Dell. The Dell restore programs only work on pre-imaged hard drives shipped from Dell and do not work on blank or wiped hard drives.

Is this the same thing as reformatting?

I have used this feature a couple of times before when the system failed. It seems to wipe out everything.

Is this sufficient? Or is there some other process I should follow.

Thanks (again).

Well, no it isn't the same as starting over. Now if this was a file infector you're dealing with I would say start with a blank and wiped disk.......but I think with what you're dealing with it would be all right to use what you have and restore to original settings. :)

And no need to be sorry. :thumbup2:
