Hi John :) ,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer. My name is m0le and I will be helping you with your log.
  • Please subscribe to this topic, if you haven't already.

  • Please avoid installing/uninstalling or updating any programs and attempting any unsupervised fixes or scans. This can make helping you impossible.

  • Please reply to this post so I know you are there.
The forum is busy and we need to have replies as soon as possible. If I haven't had a reply after 3 days I will bump the topic and if you do not reply by the following day after that then I will close the topic.

---------------------------------------------------

Hijackthis logs are not used as first scans anymore.

Please download DDS and post the logs as shown below.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

Thanks :thumbup2:

Hi John,

There's a trace of Vundo on your log. This trojan is notoriously difficult to remove so this may take a bit of time.

Firstly, we need to try and hit it hard.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop but rename it Combo-Fix.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application or, if you are using Vista, right-click and select Run As Administrator on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

Thanks :thumbup2:

I honestly think all of this will be impossible to do. My PC can't actually load up anymore, it starts up loads my desktop then nothing will load up... the eggtimer appears and my computer becomes completely unresponsive.

I'll try again... but I honestly think my PC is dead...

I downloaded Combo Fix, double click on it and nothing happens. Also this Vundo fiend has stopped Malware AntiBytes from installing...

This is mad, why are people so sad to make these things...

Can you get into safe mode?

If so please run Combofix from there and post the log. If not then let me know.

Don't despair yet, there are other options open to us, it just takes time trying them all. I will do my best for you. :thumbup2:

Hi John,

Vundo usually doesn't do this much damage.

Can you download Combofix from a clean machine onto a removable device, such as a flashdrive, then plug it into the PC and run it in safe mode that way?

Yeah I could do. But I might just do a system restore. I could install Windows Vista aswell, might be good just to install everything again.

Okay, it is the safest option. You would need to reformat and reinstall though to ensure all infections are removed.

Let me know what you wat to do, John.

Yeah I think I am going to do a reformat and reinstall. Are there guides on how to reformat and reinstall? Also, is there any chance that the virus could attach to music files or photo albums? Because hopefully I can save them.

Hi John,

Reformatting and reinstalling guides are all over the net, they differ so much from machine to machine but try this one.

Also, some trojans do attach to files such as the ones you are trying to save. Your best bet is to scan them with a good online scanner (they are good at picking those up) before you add them back into your clean system.

I would also like to add (for the benefit of other members/guests) that your system was saveable despite the problems there were. I understand completely your decision to start again though.

Cheers.

Yeah I understand it was saveable. Thanks for all your help!!

Would Malwarebytes be good enough to scan the files I want to save?

I would use your on-board antivirus to scan individual files. MBAM is really to dig out major infections.

Depends on how much time you have too.
