Main issue - Getting Memory Warnings; ran several scans and troubleshooting steps in Prep Guide to no avail - still getting Very Slow/Hanging Startup High CPU/DISK Usage and Explorer.exe Errors Upon Startup:

Ran the following with no result:
  • Windows Defender Scan
  • IO BIT SECURITY 360 BETA SCAN
  • (Now Uninstalled) AdAware Scan
  • Spybot Search & Destroy

Thank you in advance for your prompt reply and assistance ASAP! :thumbup2:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

Thank you -- I appreciate your assistance. I have since made some changes... (Removed Mcafee Suite (Seemed too slow computer further) and added Avast Virus-scan and temporarily began using Windows Firewall until another replacement is found and/or recommended -- in it's place --- and since -- I have not received any low memory warnings since my first post... HOWEVER; I am still experiencing Very Slow/Hanging Start-up High CPU/DISK Usage and throughout periods of use --- non specific to any program.

Thank you for your prompt reply in advance.

As requested a new DDS log is pasted below:

Hi Paul_P,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer. My name is m0le and I will be helping you with your log.
  • Please subscribe to this topic, if you haven't already.

  • Please avoid installing/uninstalling or updating any programs and attempting any unsupervised fixes or scans. This can make helping you impossible.

  • Please reply to this post so I know you are there.
The forum is busy and we need to have replies as soon as possible. If I haven't had a reply after 3 days I will bump the topic and if you do not reply by the following day after that then I will close the topic.

I will be back soon with the first instructions.

Thanks :thumbup2:

Hi Paul_P,

First thing is you are missing an antivirus.
  • Download and install an antivirus program, and make sure that you keep it updated
New viruses come out every minute, so it is essential that you have the latest signatures for your antivirus program to provide you with the best possible protection from malicious software.
Two good antivirus programs free for non-commercial home use are Avast! and Antivir
Note: You should only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as impairing the performance of your PC.
Next, I am not seeing any malware showing on the logs and the symptoms you are showing, therefore, look like system issues.

Are you now receiving any warning messages from your operating system?

I would like to carry out a few scans to completely rule out malware.

We Need to check for Rootkits with RootRepeal
  • Download RootRepeal from the following location and save it to your desktop:
  • Extract RootRepeal.exe from the zip archive.
  • Open Posted Image on your desktop.
  • Click the Posted Image tab.
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Check all six boxes: Posted Image
  • Push Ok
  • Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:), and press Ok.
  • Allow RootRepeal to run a scan of your system. This may take some time.
  • Once the scan completes, push the Posted Image button. Save the log to your desktop, using a distinctive name, such as RootRepeal.txt. Include this report in your next reply, please.
Then

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application or, if you are using Vista, right-click and select Run As Administrator on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

Thank you for responding -- I am subscribed and have been waiting myself for several days for a secondary reply.
  • Response 1 (Antivirus)
In re: to your suggestion for an antivirus -- May I suggest that you please re-read my several topic where I quote the following:
I have since made some changes... (Removed McAfee Suite (Seemed too slow computer further) and added Avast! Virus-scan Thus I already have an anti virus program installed. I have ran the full standard scan with no infection.

  • Response 2 (System Warnings)
I seemed to be receiving less or no further memory warnings; but shortly after that post --- I began receiving them periodically... once again... as well as the High Ram/CPU(s) usage.

  • Response 2 (Scans)

RootRepeal: I cannot get to successfully run. I'm getting the following errors:

RootRepeal Error#1: Attempt to write address:0x01d8c000
RootRepeal Error#2: Attempt to read from address:0x8b8a2655
(Crash Logs Attached)

I will run and scan and post result tomorrow after I return home from work --- with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Scan Results.

Please advise how to proceed -- I already have and have run in the past Malwarebytes Anti-Malware w no result.

Nothing there, as you suspected.

RootRepeal not working is a possible side effect of malware. I would like you to run a similar rootkit scanner, please make sure you rename it when you download it. If it crashes too we will look at other options.

We need to scan for Rootkits with GMER
  • Please download GMER from one of the following locations, and save it to your desktop, please rename it as gamer.exe.
    • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
    • Zip Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Close any and all open programs, as this process may crash your computer.
  • Double click Posted Image or Posted Image on your desktop.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • You may see this window. If you do, click No.
    Posted Image
  • Click on Posted Image and wait for the scan to finish.
  • If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • Push Posted Image and save the logfile to your desktop.
  • Copy and Paste the contents of that file in your next post.

Thanks :thumbup2:

There's nothing showing on Gmer either.

It might, at this stage, be worth running a file check to make sure we have a full operating system here.

We need to run a system file check.

Click Start > All Programs > Accessories then right-click Command Prompt and then click Run as Administrator. Then type in this command

sfc /scannow

Make sure to include the space between the first "c" and the "/".

This will run the System File checker and it will scan for corrupt or missing files. It may prompt you to insert the CD if it needs to obtain files.

Please post back when it has finished letting me know what it has reported.

The system is in working order :) so we'll try another tool. This one is more powerful so read the instructions carefully.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop but rename it Combo-Fix.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

It's found some things though not anything really worrying. How is the PC now?

The Combofix looks clean now so we now need to run a good online scanner to catch any other malware.

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image
Please also post a new set of DDS logs.

Thanks :thumbup2:

Combofix seemed to "speed it up a bit" so maybe these steps are working.

I ran the ESET OnlineScan overnight and it found one item -- I researched it online -- the threat on this was high! :thumbup2:

In any event... the log is attached as well as new DDS logs.
