To Whom it May Concern:

I had a situation with a browser hijacking so I ran a Norton's scan and a Malwarebytes scan. I found I had gotten a virus and it was removed. However, this did not fix the browser hijacking and now I have even further problems. My system has a DVD RW drive (D:) and a CD RW drive (E:) as well as an external HD (G:). Now I have listed an additional 2 cd drives and the external is now (I:). I am having problems figuring out how to get rid of these extra, non-existent drives as well as still having the redirected browser.

The actual hijacking is similar to those others listed here: I use a search engine (yahoo.com/google.com) get the results page normally but clicking the links takes me to ad pages (toseeka.com, overclick.com, etc.). Copying and pasting the address shown on the search result page to the address bar gets me to the page normally.

I tried to run DDS to post a log and am unable to do it. When I run DDS i get the following message: "Not enough main memory to complete the sort."

I have the HijackThis log below:

What further info can I post to get help with these issues (the extra drives and the browser hijack)?

Thank you in advance.

I am bumping my thread since no one has responded yet and since it was on page 19 of this forum. If this is against forum policy, I apologize.

I see many many people with a similiar problem as mine with the redirects being helped, so could someone please help me with the issues I am having?

Again, thank you in advance.

Hello screaminweasel,

Posted Image

No need to worry. There is just a huge backlog of over 500....I can assure you no log is overlooked. We see them all. :thumbup2:

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

If ComboFix will not run the first time, then rename ComboFix.exe to weasel.exe and try it again. :)

Thanks,
tea
Please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you.
Every little bit helps! :)
You can even use your credit card! Thank you!

Thank you very much, teacup61! As you saw in the other post, I did get the DDS program to run and if you need the log reposted, please let me know.

I ran combofix as directed and had some issues while it ran but will post the log below. While it was running, the following errors popped up (in order they were recieved):
1.) "pev.cfexe - File Corrupt; The file or directory C:\$Mft is corrupt and unreadable. Please run Chkdsk utility."
2.) "pev.exe - File Corrupt; The file or directory C:\$Mft is corrupt and undeadable. Please run Chkdsk utility."
3.) "pev.exe - File Corrupt; The file or directory C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\IETldCache is corrupt and unreadable. Please run ChkDsk utility."

Also, before it gets lost at the bottom of the page, THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Here is the combofix log:

Hello,

You're welcome. :) How is it running now please?

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

O4 - S-1-5-18 Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe (User 'SYSTEM')
O4 - .DEFAULT Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe (User 'Default user')
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix checked".

Reboot your computer.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)" JRE 6 Update 14.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u14-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
-- If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Please be sure that Malwarebytes is updated and have a scan with it. Post the report in your reply. :thumbup2:

Teacup61,

It is running wonderfully now. The redirects are gone, my drives are correct (except the eternal stayed I: rather than going back to G:, but I can live with that.

I followed your additional Hijack This steps as well as replacing Java with the newer version you directed me to. I ran the cleaner both for main and FireFox and scanned with malware bytes. Below is the log from MWB.

Thank you so much again. My wife and kids thank you, too.

Hello there,

Excellent to know, and you're all most welcome. :thumbup2:

Please delete ComboFix and its accompanying folder C:\Qoobox. Empty your Recycle bin and reboot your computer.

If there are no further problems:

Below I have included a number of recommendations on how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously! These few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

Regularly go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. You should also turn on the Windows automatic update feature.

You should definitely maintain a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or Outpost. I use Comodo on my own system and really like it. http://comodo.com
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. A lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Please make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

Great tips and info-----> http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Take care!
