I have been experiencing a random taskbar freeze for some time now and I desperately need to find a solution. This usually occurs immediately following an application/window close. The taskbar freezes and even though the window is now closed, it still appears in the taskbar. Start menu and icons within the taskbar are inaccessible, though desktop icons are still active and usable. Sometimes, opening the task manager, closing the explorer.exe and then running explorer.exe helps, but not always. In all instances, if I give the system enough time (sometimes 3 or 4 minutes), the taskbar will un-freeze and everything catches up. No error messages, no pop-ups. I believe this issue has something to do with Service Pack 3 and may be specific to our office environment. I performed a clean install of WinXP SP1 on a second office computer; no problems. Updated to SP2; no problems. Upgraded to SP3; started having problems, but I don't know how to fix. I'm running the same OS/SP combo at home with no issues. Only other thought: I run an old copy of Photoshop 7.0. When I run the program, it can take 3-5 minutes to launch. If I disable the network connection (LAN), the program starts instantaneously. Does this help at all?

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer.

My name is Syler, I will be helping you to solve your Malware issues. Whilst I am helping you, I would
be grateful if you would note the following:
  • Please do not run other tools or scans unless I ask you to and follow all the steps I give you, in order.
  • Copy and paste all logs requested in you reply, Do not attach them unless asked too.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask before you proceed with my instructions.
  • Please continue to work with me, until I tell you your machine appears to be clean. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If I do not hear back from you within 5 days of my last post, then this topic will be closed.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Note: If you already have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, just update then run it.
  • Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan (the scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient).
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply .
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Next
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)
Then please post back here with the following:
  • MBAM log
  • log.txt
  • info.txt
Thanks

Hi Vinnie G,

I don't see to much wrong in your logs, lets see if their is something hiding.

We need to scan for Rootkits with GMER
  • Please download GMER from one of the following locations, and save it to your desktop:
    • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
    • Zip Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs, as this process may crash your computer.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security program drivers will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double click on Gmer to run it.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • You may see a rootkit warning window, If you do, click No.
  • Click on Posted Image and wait for the scan to finish.
  • If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • Push Posted Image and save the logfile to your desktop.
  • Copy and Paste the contents of that file in your next post.

I'm a little confused. I ran the program: it started fine, scanned, finished; but I did not receive and option to save the log. At one point I had to minimize the program and when I maximized the program, the "SCAN, COPY, and SAVE" options were gone. It continued to scan even without the buttons (I could see the file names flying by) and when it was complete, there were 4 entries in the Malware tab. I restarted the program and the entries were still there, so I clicked the SAVE button and copied the log below. If you think I need to scan again, please let me know.

You need to run the scan again, it does not prompt you to save the log, you have to press the SAVE button once it
has finished it's SCAN, whilst scanning let it run unhindered and don't run any other programs, let me no if you are
still unsure what I mean.

I understand. I will schedule time to run it again tonight. I know that you are supposed to save the log after the scan in finished, however, after I had minimized then restored the program, the SAVE button was missing. When I run it tonight, I will let it complete without interruption. Thanks for your patience.

Well, the weather doesn't give a fig about my intentions to run a scan; last night high winds knocked out the power here and I wasn't able to complete the scan. I will try again in the latter half of the day, but I'll possibly have to wait until tonight. I will post again when I have the log.

Hi Vinnie G,

Im not sure we are dealing with malware here, but lets do another check with an online scan. Are you still having
the issues describe in your first post or any others?

Peer-to-Peer Programs Warning
Your log shows that you are using so called peer-to-peer or file-sharing programs (in your case Bitorrent). These programs allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world cyber crime has come to an enormous dimension and any means is used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of the malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it.

It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care. Some further readings on this subject, along the included links, are as follows: File-Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer and Risks of File-Sharing Technology.

It is also important to note that sharing entertainment files and proprietary software infringes the copyright laws in many countries over the world and you are putting yourself at risk of being indicted through organizations watching over the rights of the authors of such files (i.e. the RIAA for music files, or the MPAA for movie files in the USA) or the authors of the files themselves.

Naturally there are also legal ways to use these services, such as downloading Linux distributions or office suites such as "Open Office."

It is your decision whether or not you wish to keep your program(s). However, please refrain from using them until your computer has been declared clean.

Please set your system to show all files.
Click Start, open My Computer, select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.

Then

Please click this link-->Jotti
When the jotti page has finished loading, click the Browse button and navigate to the following file and click Submit.

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\1ль13.sys

Please post back the results of the scan in your next post.
If Jotti is busy, try the same at Virustotal: http://www.virustotal.com/

Install ERUNT
This tool will create a complete backup of your registry. After every reboot, a new backup is created to ensure we have a safety net after each step. Do not delete these backups until we are finished.
  • Please download erunt-setup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click erunt-setup.exe. Follow the prompts and allow ERUNT to be installed with the settings at default. If you do not want a Desktop icon, feel free to uncheck that. When asked if you want to create an ERUNT entry in the startup folder, answer Yes. You can delete the installation file after use.
  • Erunt will open when the installation is finished. Check all items to be backed up in the default location and click OK.
You can find a complete guide to using the program here:
http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/erunt.txt

When we are finished with fixing your computer (I will make it clear when we are), you can uninstall ERUNT through Add/Remove Programs. The backups will be stored at C:\WINDOWS\erdnt, and will not be deleted when ERUNT is uninstalled.

We need to execute an OTM script
  • Please download OTM by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Paste the following code under the Posted Image area. Do not include the word "Code".
    :Reg
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\NvMediaCenter]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\PlayNC Launcher]
    :Files
    C:\Documents and Settings\donovan\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\taskmgr.exe.lnk
    :Commands
    [EmptyTemp]
    [Reboot]
  • Push the large Posted Image button.
  • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
  • Copy/Paste the contents under the Posted Image line here in your next reply.
  • If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)" JRE 6 Update 14.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u14-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
-- If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.

Thank you for voicing your concerns with the file sharing software that I have installed on the computer. To be honest, I did use Bitorrent to pull down a copy OpenOffice, but it's been months since I used the software. To remove all suspicions, I will go ahead and remove the peer-to-peer software completely.

Also, I wanted to share a possible fix that I came across that will embarrass the heck out of me if it proves to work. I was searching forums for other solutions when I came across a post from 2006 in regards to telephone-modems causing similar problems. The user was working on a Dell - just like me - and was having taskbar problems whenever he fired-up his internet connection. Eventually, the freeze would stop and the applications would catch up. He felt that the problem began to occur after he updated his Service Pack and he thought that the "updated" plug and play drivers that were installed may have been the problem. Anyway, instead of using the drivers provided by Dell and Microsoft, he looked up the serial number on his physical card and found that his card was made by a different company and that the drivers provided were "okay" but not the best they could be.

I opened my device manager to check out my NIC and the drivers that it was using. 2003 drivers was what my card was using. I hit the "update drivers" button and Windows reached out to search for updates. Nothing. I went to the Dell site and found my model of computer and downloaded the drivers they provided for my machine. Came back, uninstalled the drivers, rebooted, then installed the Dell, model specific, drivers. Still had problems with the taskbar. Looked at the device manager again, saw that I was using an Intel PRO/1000 MT NIC, went to Intel and downloaded their drivers. Removed, reboot, installed new drivers. Am now using 2008 Intel drivers and haven't had a freeze all day. I'm going to continue testing, but I'm hopeful that this is the fix!

I'm going to feel foolish and slightly embarrassed if out-dated drivers have been causing me problems. Or rather, Dell/Microsoft-provided drivers that weren't 100% compatible with my hardware. Makes me wonder how many other components I need to update manually.

If this fixes the problem, I think we can consider this issue resolved. If the problems persist, I will run the scans as you instructed. Thank you for your time and patience as I do more testing. I will let you know how my computer performs over the next couple days.

that you upload the file I pointed out to jotti and you should also update your Java. Apart from that though if you
are happy that you have resolved your issues then we can close the topic.
