Hi

I seem to be infected. Google searches redirect.

Ad-aware finds Win32TrojanTDSS but it always comes back after a reboot. Ad-aware previously found: Win32.Trojan.Agent2, Win32.TrojanDownloader.Agent, and Win32WormKoobface but these have not been found after the first scan-remove cycle.

Kaspersky online scan finds Trojan-downloader.Win32Agent.CFWA. Sophos doesn't install properly.

As requested in preparation guide, DDS was run. The DDS.txt log is inline below, followed by Kaspersky log. The DDS attach.txt has been zipped and then attached.

Any/all help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello oldbluecorolla,

What version of Malwarebytes are you running? It was recently update to version 1.39, Database 2432
If you are not using those, then please update, run and post a fresh Malwarebyes log.

*****************

Download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.
Save it to your Desktop.
Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt.
Please post the contents of that document.

*****************

Please close FireFox and Internet Explorer browser before running OTM.

Please download OTM by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
Double click the icon on your desktop to run it.
(Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).

Copy the lines in the code box below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C[/b] (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
Do not include the word "Code".

:files
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\Wn.upd
:commands
[emptytemp]
[Reboot]

Return to OTM, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.

Click the red Moveit! button.
Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
Close OTM

Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

*****************

Please post the last malwarebytes log so I can see what it is finding.
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy&Paste the entire MBAM report (even if it does not find anything) in your next reply

*****************

If you dont have Hijackthis version 2.02 installed then
please download and install the new version of Hijackthis by following the instructions here: http://www.download.com/Trend-Micro-Hijack....html?tag=mncol

Note that it is unnecessary to uninstall the old version because the new one will be copied to a different folder.
Let it install in the default folder C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis
Post a Hijackthis log.

Now that you have it installed, let's look in a different place for signs.

Open HijackThis 2.0.2
Press the button 'View Misc Tools Section'
Press the button 'open uninstall manager'
Press the button 'save list'
Save it to your desktop.
Press Save. Save it your desktop.
A notepad file will open.
If no notepad opens then it will be on your desktop (where you saved it)
Post the content here in your reply.
Close HijackThis.

Hi SifuMike

Thanks for your help.

1) I've updated Malwarebytes and run it (but in safe mode - it wouldn't run otherwise). The log is posted below. I ignored everything it found.
2) SecurityCheck.exe was run and the log posted below. I notice it says that my Java is out-of-date, but I actually updated it earlier today.
3) OTM was run, including moving the Wn.upd file. The after-reboot log file is posted below.
4) Hijackthis was installed and run in safe mode. It too wouldn't run otherwise. Log file posted below.
5) Hijackthis uninstall list also posted.

Hi oldbluecorolla,

Uninstall Java 6 Update 3 and Java 6 Update 5. Old versions of Java are malware magnets.

If MBAM will not run, go to the program directory of MBAM (e.g. C:\Program FIles\Malwarebytes Antimalware\) then rename mbam.exe to newtool3.exe, double click newtool3.exe to proceed in running a Quick scan.

I ignored everything it found

There is no sense in running it if you are going to ignore everything it found. :thumbup2:

Your MBAM log shows "No action taken".
This usually occurs if you forget to click "Remove Selected" and instead only clicked "Save Logfile.
Please read this thread and rescan again only using the (Quick Scan) in normal mode and check all items found for removal.
Don't forgot to reboot afterwards. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
After performing the new scan, click the Logs tab and copy/paste the contents of the new report in your next reply.

Occasionally malware hides itself from HijackThis.
Navigate to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe using My Computer or Windows Explorer and right-click on the HijackThis.exe file.
Select the Rename option from the right-click menu and rename HijackThis.exe to fluffybunny.exe and press Enter
Scan with HijackThis (fluffybunny.exe) again and post a new HijackThis log..

Ok, will do these scans tonight. I did try renaming the Malwarebytes and Hijackthis files to different files names to make them run yesterday, but that didn't work. If it doesn't work again, is it ok to run the scans in safe mode and then reboot back to normal mode?

Hi oldbluecorolla,

Try this random renamer for MBAM http://kixhelp.com/wr/files/mb/randmbam.exe

If it works, then post the Malwarebtytes log.

Malwarebyes works best in the Normal Mode. If it will not run in the normal mode, then you could try the safe mode (but it wont work as well as in Normal Mode)

Dont run Hijackthis in the Safe Mode, as it will leave out all the running processes. I need to see the running processes to determine what malware is on the system.

Good question. I tried a number of different things back in June but then I moved and I haven't tried to solve the infection since (other than posting here). I think I downloaded it but did not run it but I don't remember entirely.

You mean your dont remembere running it?
It is not easy to forget running it, as it is a major chore.

Your log shows you ran it. :) You may have shot yourself in the foot. :thumbup2:

I don't recognize any of the screenshots that are shown on the BC combofix tutorial. That makes me think I didn't run it. Also, if it's a major chore then I think I would remember running it.

Ok, I've uninstalled Java 6 updates 3 and 5. After a reboot, I ran Malwarebytes (after updating it). It found nothing. It did run fine - no filename change needed. The log is posted below.

Hijackthis also ran fine without a filename change. Log posted below.

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix checked"

Reboot your computer, post a new Hijackthis log, and tell me how your computer is running.
If I've saved you time & money,

On reboot the computer hanged on a blank grey screen. I'm not sure if this was on power down or power up. After a hard reboot, it came back normally.
New Hijackthis log below. The computer seems to be running ok - the google installer error box hasn't popped up yet.
