Hello,

This is my second posting. I have two machines here, both running Windows 2000 Professional sp4 and both acting really weird in identical ways.

I think I accidentally infected them with a dirty flash drive a couple of weeks ago. Since then, I have been able to remove a bunch of worms and trojans by running several AV scans and manually deleting files (MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware, Ad-Aware, UnHackMe, HiJackThis, and GMER).

But now I'm hopelessly stuck. The scans for MalwareBytes, SAS, UnhackMe and Ad-Aware all show clean, happy machines; the HiJackThis scans look pretty clean, too, but scanning with Gmer results in an identical rootkit declaration every time on both machines.

I have tried to make sense of the GMER results (pasted below), but I'm in over my head and need help (or reassurance that there's nothing really wrong).

Thanks again for your time,
:trumpet:  :flowers: :inlove:

Hello.

GMER and Hijackthis is a very advanced tools. Please do not fix things yourself or remove things that says " <-- Rootkit".

This:

Service C:\WINNT\system32\MSTask.exe? (*** hidden *** ) [AUTO] Schedule <-- ROOTKIT !!!

That is a false-positive, don't worry about it.

Have you ever ran Combofix on this machine before?

With Regards,
Extremeboy

Thank you, Extremeboy!

Yes, I did run ComboFix on both machines--it was one of the Hiren's bootCD "desparation tools" I was using after SAS & Malwarebytes started crashing during scans. After reading your reply, I looked around the forums and do realize now the stupidity of unsupervised combofixing... :flowers: :trumpet:

So the rootkit declaration was caused by ComboFix? Are all the other entries normal too? Is there a place I can go to learn more about how GMER and HJT work?

Thanks again,
Diana McCrorey

Hello.

So the rootkit declaration was caused by ComboFix?

Not exactly. Without going to details, I would believe that it was caused by a file that Combofix uses that created those false-positives. How Combofix works are not allowed to be posted in public.

Are all the other entries normal too?

Yes, they are fine. No need to worry about it.

Is there a place I can go to learn more about how GMER and HJT work?

GMER specfically not really, but if you wish you can learn about Malware Removal, Bleeping Computer has a malware removal training program.

This training helps you with different aspect of malware removal in terms of tools and how windows work too. GMER is an advanced rootkit tool, and you need to know some information about windows as well to interpret them. You will learn how to remove malware specifically.

If you are interested, please read this topic: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/86678/malware-removal-training-program/

Good luck! :thubmup2:
