The problem I am experiencing started out innocently (or not) enough as a browser hijacker (using Mozilla Firefox 3.0.11). Links clicked in a search would open up a new tab to a predetermined web site or ad site. Also noticing several new tasks running in the background upon startup that I have never noticed before such as:

"LUlnchr.exe"
"Communications_Helper.exe"
Two instances of "LVComSer.exe"
"WkUFind.exe"

Also, more recently when Firefox starts the computer will sometimes lock up, allowing the mouse to move around, but will not respond to any commands and will require a reboot, or searching using google just will yield a blank page, as web addresses have to be entered directly into the url searchbar. After reset of the computer, sometimes at the Windows "Welcome" screen, the computer will also hang up and require reboot again. Also after any power up, once Windows has finished loading, I get a dialog box that the "View Manager service has encountered a problem and needs to close."

Another strange problem I noticed, and this has happened only once, my network connection kept disconnecting and reconnecting every 30 seconds or so, and while it would do this the computer would freeze completely regularly for 10-15 seconds or so.

I did try Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, but the installer would not run, but could be seen in the task manager, and the same goes for HijackThis (same for both in safe mode). I was able to get both installers to run by renaming them, but Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware install would freeze just before it finished. HijackThis, however, worked.

Lastly, a scan of the pc using AVG Anti-Virus Free (ver. 8.5.375) (virus database ver.270.13.8/2223) found "Trojan horse Dropper.Generic_c.BBU" which was moved to the virus vault and deleted.

I know most of this info can be determined in the logs, but I want to make sure to be as descriptive as possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and thanks ahead of time.

The DDS Log is Below:

Hi

My name is Extremeboy (or EB for short), and I will be helping you with your log.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine. If you have not done so, include a description of your problem, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

If you do not make a reply in 5 days, we will need to close your topic.

You may want to keep the link to this topic in your favourites. Alternatively, you can click the Posted Image button at the top bar of this topic and Track this Topic. The topics you are tracking can be found here.

Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:
  • Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools.
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
  • Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean". We do not want to clean you part-way, only to have the system re-infect itself.
  • Please reply using the Posted Image button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply.
  • Old topics are closed after 3 days with no reply, and working topics are closed after 5 days. If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just post back here so that we know you're still here.

If you still require assistance post a new set of DDS Logs and a description of any remaining problems or symptoms you may still have please.

If for any reason you did not post a DDS log please refer to this page and in step #6 there is instructions on downloading and running DDS. IF you have any problems just let me know in your next reply or simply post a Hijackthis log.

Thanks again and we apologzie for the delay.

With Regards,
Extremeboy
Note: Please do not PM me asking for help, instead please post it in the correct forum requesting for help. Help requests via the PM system will be ignored.

If I'm helping you and I don't reply within 48 hours please feel free to send me a PM.

The help you receive here is always free but if you wish to show your appreciation, you may wish to Posted Image.

Yes I'm still here!!!

I know you are all very busy here, so I appologize for the late reply Extremeboy. I was away for a few days, however upon returning I am still experiencing the same issues as described above, more primarily the browser hijacking issues. Unfortunately using the web is very difficut now because whichever browser I try to use, whether it be Firefox or Internet Explorer, my computer will spontaneously lock up. This could happen after 10 minutes or as soon as I click the icon to open the program. I ran DDS again for a fresh set of logs as you instructed, but one thing that I should point out- each time I run it, upon completion I get a dialog reading "The Sort Utility has encountered a problem and needs to close." I am unsure if this is affecting my logs at all, but DDS does seem to complete normally before I get the dialog. Either way here is the new set of logs, and thanks again for your time... Sorry for the late response again as well.

Hello.

We'll start with Combofix.

Download and Run ComboFix

Note to readers of this post other than the starter of this thread:
ComboFix is a VERY POWERFUL tool which should NOT BE USED without guidance of an expert.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.
Link 1
Link 2

Please refer to this page for full instructions on how to run ComboFix.
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double click ComboFix.exe to start the program. Agree to the prompts.
  • When ComboFix is finished, a log report (C:\ComboFix.txt) will open. Post back with it.
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running.

ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Note: Please Do NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may call it to stall.

~Extremeboy
Note: Please do not PM me asking for help, instead please post it in the correct forum requesting for help. Help requests via the PM system will be ignored.

Ok Combo Fix found some stuff... but I had to rename the file for it to run, as was the problem with hijackthis or other anti-malware programs. Here is the log as well. First try it seems to have cleared up my browser woes, but I will keep testing my system to make sure there aren't still any issues.

Thanks again for your help on this!

Hello.

Please continue with the following.

Download and Run OTM
  • Please download OTM by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click the Posted Image icon on your desktop If you are running on Vista, right click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
  • Paste the following code under the Posted Image area. Do not include the word "Code".
    :services
    jkve
    imaq1394k
    :files
    h:\windows\system32\drivers\mfbbtjeg.sys
    h:\windows\system32\drivers\imaq1394kl.sys
    :commands
    [EmptyTemp]
    [Reboot]
  • Click the large Posted Image button.
  • If OTM requires are reboot, please allow it to do so.
  • Copy/Paste the contents under the Posted Image line here in your next reply.
Note: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Download and run MalwareBytes Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

For complete or visual instructions on installing and running Malwarebytes Anti-Malware please read this link

Take a new DDS run and post back with those logs as well.

With Regards,
Extremeboy
