Dell Vostro 1500 Intel®Core™2 Duo CPU Microsoft WIndows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2

Ok Well im very new 2 this site and etc so hopefully some one is able 2 help me with this issue that is driving me insane It would be a godsend if sum1 can just send me in the right direction. (i hope this is the right section.)

Problem
: Well My issue started a few days ago when my computer froze up. At 1st i thought it was just something minor. But then it did it again & again. Everytime I open up either Windows Media Player or internet explorer and if i go 2 certain website (ex. myspace) it would freeze up. The Mouse will move 4 a little bit longer. But adventually I would just have 2 hold the power button down and restart. Oh and this issue was after i downloaded a song.

Things Ive tried: If I just turn the computer on and do nothing it will be perfectly fine 4 a while. Its runs slow though. I uninstalled internet explorer 8, and went back 2 Internet Explorer 7. And then i did the same for Windows Media Player. If its in "safemode" it works perfectly fine. Stays on and everything. If its in "safemode networking" it works somewhat better but internet explorer will just close. Ive ran mcafee, malwarebytes and after it cleaned it up. it ran better for a MOMENT but then the next day it was back 2 being slow then freezing. after i uninstalled I.E and Windows Media Player(which was a hr ago) it ran pretty fast. But when i tried 2 play a video or listen 2 a song the computer frooze. So it seems the problem is in Windows Media and Internet Explorer.

Trynna find a solution: im willin 2 do n e thing 2 fix the computer since its my grandmothers. I dont have money so im trying 2 fix the problem myself. I tried 2 do system restore. Where u press <Ctrl> <F11> but it doesnt work. The computer turns on and i press it on every screen i see. Nothing Happenings. I hope and pray sum 1 can put me on the right path 2 fixing this problem. thanks

Please try a couple of these free online scanners to see if anything has slipped by your protection:
(Be advised that some of these scanners will pickup things in "quarantine" from other anti-virus programs - so review the results carefully)

http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp

If you find that you're infected (or the scan doesn't complete or closes unexpectedly), post in the Am I Infected forum located here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/103/am-i-infected-what-do-i-do/

I would also check Event Viewer for errors which might provide clues, How To Use Event Viewer - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/40108/how-to-use-event-viewer/

<<...but i was wondering about reinstalling my "operating System". That was advice i heard from some1 else. Do you guys think that is a good idea or no?>>

It all depends. Repair install or clean install?

Reinstalling the operating system will be useful only if the operating system is the problem, not hardware.

and what is operating system?

Windows XP is the operating system.

<<...is that like system restore?>>

System Restore is a function of XP, All About System Restore in WinXP - http://bertk.mvps.org/ in my world. But various manufacturers (Compaq, Gateway, etc.) often refer to something else by that name...in their case, it means a mechanism by the system is returned to the exact state it was in when initially purchased.

<<...does every laptop comes w/ a windows Installation cd??>>

No.

Take a look at http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/syst...e.htm#wp1082894 , scroll down to Restore Your, etc.

Hi dvcrocks, and welcome to BleepingComputer.

Your topic may be similar in nature, but you would benefit from posting your own topic where your specific problem can be addressed. This will also keep the original topic from getting confused with two different topics being responded.

Thanks,
