How is everyone doing? Here it goes, my mom's computer crashed or should I say the CPU burnt up! I have ordered and built her A new tower and need to get some pictures off of the old drive! I have installed the drive (IDE) and the computer does not see it! The old drive does still have the orig OS on it. Could that be the problem? How can I get into this drive and grab the pic's for her? I have gone into disk mangment and I see it but can not assign it A drive letter, when I right click on it all it gives me is A help option.

if you have a CD drive on a sererate cable from the HD that runs the computer temporarily install the old HD in it's place.

You could also try setting the jumper on the old HD to Cable select.

Once you get the drive to show up open it in My Computer
Double click Documents & settings
Double click the folder with the user name
Double click My Documents
Check My Picturers & make sure it'e the folder you want
Go back to My Documents
Rename My Pictures to Saved Pictures
Right click on it
On the menu hilite Send to
Clicck on Mt Documents
It will be transfered to My Documents on the new unit.
The reason for renaming the folder is sp the My Pictures on the new unit doesn't get overwritting in case there is anything in it.

hamluis- I see the drive! It doesn't tell me anything about the file system, the layout is simple and the status is healthy! Also no drive letter next to it!

As FJB pointed out...have you checked the jumper setting on the drive?

http://www.wdc.com/en/library/eide/2579-001037.pdf See the section on EIDE drives.

Manufacturer and model of the hard drive?
