Microsoft no longer supports Outlook Express, but I still need it, and want to re install it. IE 7/8 doesn't carry it, and IE 6 no longer is supported. Any sites or downloads available for a fix? Once upon a time you could download the 500k internet installer and then force it to download a complete copy. Microsoft seems to have disabled that now because it complains that it can't find an internet connection (which obviously isn't the problem).

I have uninstalled/reinstalled OE through Add/Remove Programs --> Windows Components. The Windows Address Book works.

The message I get is "Outlook Express could not be started because one of its libraries could not be found. Outlook Express may not be installed correctly."

I have occasionally received complaints about MSOE.DLL (which is there).

OE does work on another XP SP2 computer (6.0.2900.2180) but the XP SP3 computer (6.0.2900.5512) does not. The profiles are the same on both.

Obviously the SP3 computer has more patches installed (hence the newer version of OE). One of those patches seems to be causing a problem.

I need it (OE) to work with a CRM program that will probably not integrate with Windows Live Mail or whatever else you might suggest as a replacement.

Thanks in advance.

<<Microsoft no longer supports Outlook Express,>>

Where did you get that idea?

Outlook Express is part of Internet Explorer, at least for XP and preceding operating systems. If one is installed, so is the other. If one is supported, so is the other.

In any case, How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=318378

They have cut off downloads of MSIE6 SP1. That used to be one way of downloading Outlook Express.

Up until MSIE8 was released, you could download the 500k installer and then force a full download with:
ie6setup.exe /c:"ie6wzd.exe /d /s:""#E"

Whatever download location that used to contact is no longer listening.

IE6 is outdated, has been superseded by IE7 and IE8.

Which means that IE6 has vulnerabilities that have been corrected/addressed in IE7 & IE8.

It's irresponsibile for a developer of programs or operating systems...to support versions which have known vulnerabilities to malware, IMO. This is one reason Adobe Flash produces so many updated versions.

Life moves on...
