Hello. I am using windows xp. For some reason whenever I try to open or run any programs, I am given this prompt.... " Choose the program you want to use to open this file:" Then I am given a lot of options to choose from, many of the options, I am sure are not what I need to open the program. This happens whenever I try and open anything. I just tried opening the 'system' folder in the control panel and the error message stated, " C:\windows\system32\rundl32.exe Application not found." What does this mean?

When I turned on the computer I got this file: "Windows cannot find 'c:\windows\system32\mshmd.exe'

Is is something with registry? The crazy thing is, all of this occured after I purchase " Registry Mechanic". Can u help me?

Moved to the XP forums
This is the reason Bleeping Computer does not recommend registry cleaners
Did the program you used have you create a back up?
Do you have a retail XP CD or at least a set of recovery CD's?

I have the same problem. I was having major problems getting rid of the (Windows Antivirus Pro) MalWare and after safe mode deleting of stuff with the same date and time stamp, I must have deleted the wrong thing. Took me 10 hours to track and destroy it. Now i have the "Open With" problem described here.

You might want to try the EXE File Association Fix at http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

As a precaution, you might backup your registry...even though Doug Knox is a reliable source of much info...things can go wrong with any system.

ERUNT Registry Backup Tool - http://www.snapfiles.com/get/erunt.html

Never one to just simply wait around, I used my windows disk and used repair......well Now. The computer shows an error message "Cannot find xxxx file" on all exe programs. I am currently copying my photos and documents to my external. I will then do a reformat and reinstall though it is a old copy of windows xp. Security 1
