Hi everyone,

I was recently given a "new" work computer and have had some really wonderful problems with it.

1. Often after the machine starts, I am unable to connect to the internet. Changing network settings accomplishes nothing, but I've found that the problem can typically be resolved with 2 or 3 restarts.

2. Load to Black - A more extreme version of #1 - machine turns on, starts loading, but I just end up with a black screen and a functioning but useless mouse. I just have to power it down and try again.

3. Random Shutdown - Kind of what it sounds like. I'll be plugging along and suddenly, without warning my screen is black and my computer has simply turned off.

4. Notepod.exe - I've tried to get rid of this using a few tools with no luck. What's interesting is that when I double-click on a .TXT file, I receive an AdAware error message. (See attached file - blockedprocess.gif) However, I can launch Notepad fine from within my Start Menu or Quick Launch Toolbar without any errors.

And with that, here is my HijackThis log:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

regards, Elise

Hello.

We need to run Combofix. Please follow the instructions below on running it.

Download and Run ComboFix

Note to readers of this post other than the starter of this thread:
ComboFix is a VERY POWERFUL tool which should NOT BE USED without guidance of an expert.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

Please refer to this page for full instructions on how to run ComboFix.
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double click ComboFix.exe to start the program. Agree to the prompts.
  • When ComboFix is finished, a log report (C:\ComboFix.txt) will open. Post back with it.
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running.

ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Note: Please Do NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may call it to stall.

With Regards,
Extremeboy

Thanks, extremeboy! The board said my ComboFix log was too long when I tried to post it directly, so I zipped up the text and attached it to this post.

There are some peculiar items in the long lists of files - files that live on an external I have attached to this machine, but I've never opened or accessed them - it's as if a copyies of hundreds of files (or at least the file names) were made and stored in these Windows/Web/.. directories.

Thanks again for your help!

J

Hello.

What Combofix deleted was right, they are created from this autorun.worm infection. There were other things Combofix removed as well and they are traces and parts of other infections. There are other infections as well on your computer that is yet to be removed, however, one thing I need to warn you about is the backdoor trojan you had on your machine. It has been removed however, please act accordingly reading the information below.

Unfortunatly One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

If you wish to continue with the disinfection process, please follow the instructions below:

Run ComboFix with CFScript

We will run ComboFix again. This time it will be slightly different from the initial run.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are unsure how.
  • Open notepad (Start>Run>"notepad") and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/238365/hijackthis-log-notepod-random-shutdown/
    Collect::[68]
    c:\windows\system32\notepod.exe
    Registry::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center]
    "AntiVirusOverride"=dword:00000000
    Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe. (This should be your desktop.)
    Posted Image
  • Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you at "C:\ComboFix.txt"
  • Please post the contents of the Combofix log in your next reply.
Upload Samples by ComboFix

When Combofix finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box. With the above script, ComboFix captured some files to submit for analysis.
  • Important: Ensure you are connected to the internet before clicking OK on the message box.
  • A blue-screen would appear auto-uploading the zipped file I requested.
  • After the uploading is done you should see a message near the bottom saying "Upload was Succesfull".
**NOTE**
=================
  • IF for some reason Combofix fails to upload anything please do the following:
  • Go to Start >> My Computer > C:\
  • Then Navigate to the C:\Qoobox\Quarantine folder.
  • Find the archive zip file called "[68]-Submit_Date_Time.zip"
  • Simply go to This Channel and upload the submit.zip archive file to me.
  • Follow the instructions on that page to copy/paste/send the requested file.
Let me know how it goes and if the upload went successfully or not in your next reply.

Download and run MalwareBytes Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

For complete or visual instructions on installing and running Malwarebytes Anti-Malware please read this link

Download and Run OTS

Note: You must be logged on to the system with an account that has Administrator privileges to run this program.
  • Download OTS.exe by OldTimer and save it to your Desktop
  • Double-click on the Posted Image icon to run it. If you are using Windows Vista, please right-click on it and select run as administrator.
  • Leave everything at the deafult setting. Then press the "Extras" under the "Additional Scans" heading.
  • This should check a few boxes. Do not touch it.
Note: If you are using a Windows 64bit machine, please make sure the checkbox next to 64Bit box is checked.
  • Now click the Posted Image button.
  • Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
  • Close Notepad (saving the change if necessry).
Use the Add Reply button, please Attach the scan logs back here (do not copy/paste it as it will be too big to fit into the post). The log file shall be located on your desktop as well.

Thanks.

Hey again!

ComboFix log pasted below, MBAM and OTS attached.

I followed the directions and dragged the script file into ComboFix, and it appeared to work, but I was never prompted to 'OK' an upload, and neer saw an Upload message of any kind. When I browsed to C:\Qoobox\Quarantine there was no file named "[68]-Submit_Date_Time.zip" or anything similar.

Should I try it again?

Thanks so much, I can already feel this machine's tension releasing. :thumbup2:

Just wanted to mention that I am on my way out of the office for the weekend, and so any direction you give me at this point I won't be able to work on until Monday morning. I just thought you might want to know in case you're juggling multiple things and need to prioritize.

Thanks so much again, I really do appreciate it. Have a good weekend.

Hello.

I reviewed the Combofix and OTS log. For some reason the Comofix did not get processed completely.

Please make sure everything you copy in codebox below and pasting it to notepad looks exactly like what I wrote down in codebox. Any problems/issues please let me know. Also there is somethings we need to script out that for some reason was not included in the intial script. Probably forgot to add it in.

    Collect::[68]
    c:\windows\system32\notepod.exe
    Suspect::
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\GINASTU1.DLL
    NetSvc::
    inzolk
    texkes

**NOTE**
=================

Please post the Combofix log in your next reply.

Thanks.

With Regards,
Extremeboy

Hello again.

Happy Monday! ComboFix seemed to run correctly this time and files successfully uploaded at the end of the process. New CF log below. This notepod guy is persistent!

Happy Monday to you too! :) We got that notepod file down but a few things we still need to do.

Continue with the following. We need to run Combofix one last time.

    Suspect::[68]
    c:\windows\system32\ginastu1.dll
    DDS::
    uInternet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local;<local>
    Registry::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\svchost]
    "inzolk"=-
    "texkes"=-
    Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe. (This should be your desktop.)

**NOTE**
=================

Download and run MalwareBytes Anti-Malware(Full Scan)

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop if you lost your copy and need to install it, otherwise skip the installation step and continue with the Full Scan.

alternate download link 2
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.

Post back with the Combofix and MBAM log in your next reply.

We're almost done. :thumbup2:
