I'm having trouble trying to fix my family's computer. There's a lot of junk on it and it has had viruses before. Malwarebytes has gotten rid of pretty much everything up to this point.

Yesterday, a large amount of fake warnings began appearing on the pc. It was called "System Security 2009" but given the amount of pop-up windows, I suspect there was more than one. I have had a virus like that before, so I knew what it was. I tried to run "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware" but it would not start up. I'd double click it and the process would appear in the task manager, but nothing more would happen, even if I waited. I restarted the computer, only to find that when it came back up, many processes would not start, I could not open task manager, the internet (neither internet explorer or firefox), or anything. A notification window would appear saying that the desired application was infected and could not be opened, then told me to "update my anti-virus software". The only thing I could open was my computer and other folders. Also my entire windows theme has been changed to "windows classic" and the whole bottom task bar and start menu is gone.

Thanks to a previous post by another user, I managed to get rid of whatever was plagueing the start-up processes and task manager. The pop-ups don't come up anymore, however, the theme and missing start menu are still issues. I cannot drag and drop things in the folders, and I cannot open anything except folders, notepad, and Firefox. The computer will not connect to the internet (the connection is good I know for a fact) and when I try to open Internet Explorer, it flashes up on the screen and then goes away. The process appears in the task manager, then promptly goes away again. I tried to redownload Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. First time, wouldn't finish downloading. Second time, I actually got it to install, but it wouldn't let me start it straight from the setup and now it gets a run-time error when I try to open it.

I can run "Runscanner" but I honestly have no idea what to do once it is done.

I'm trying to give all the info I can in this first post so as not to waste you guys' time. I'm sorry if I left something out. Thanks.

Hello Esquilito and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.
