I had the Virtumonde virus (I'm pretty sure) and found and deleted a number of files/folders. Since then, I've run VundoFix several times, which never finds anything. My Panda Security scan finds an infected system file everyday and disinfects it. I believe it's the same one and keeps on coming back. I've also run the online virus scanner at pandasecurity.com/activescan. The file it seems to find most often is titled "blank.gif" in the C:/Windows/system32 folder. I've also run ComboFix. The most noticeable change is that once ComboFix finishes, my desktop wallpaper has changed. This infection keeps on coming back every few days or so. I disnfect it with the virus scan, which works great for that day, but the infection never fails to return. It causes my Internet connection to run incredibly slowly or not at all. Help!

Sorry, I forgot to add that I'm using Windows XP. I've also run Malwarebytes, which lately never finds anything, although the other virus scanners do find the infected file(s). Sometimes, running the Panda Security virus scan freezes up - I suspect the virus does that.

Be careful with ComboFix... It can trash your computer

Please print out and follow these instructions: "How to use SDFix". <- This program is for Windows 2000/XP ONLY.
When using this tool, you must use the Administrator's account or an account with "Administrative rights"
  • Disconnect from the Internet and temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any real time protection programs before performing a scan.
  • When done, the SDFix report log will open in notepad and automatically be saved in the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
  • If SDFix is unable to run after rebooting from Safe Mode, run SDFix in either Mode, and type F, then press Enter for it to finish the final stage and produce the report.
  • Please copy and paste the contents of Report.txt in your next reply.
  • Be sure to renable you anti-virus and and other security programs before connecting to the Internet.
-- If the computer has been infected with the VirusAlert! malware warning from the clock and the Start Menu icons or drives are not visible, open the SDFix folder, right-click on either the XP_VirusAlert_Repair.inf or W2K VirusAlert_Repair.inf (depending on your version of Windows) and select Install from the Context menu. Then reboot to apply the changes.

Thanks for your help! My antivirus scanner automatically disinfected a system infection again right before I ran SDFix. Hopefully you'll be able to find traces of it so I can get rid of this virus once and for all. Here's the report:

Please download SmitfraudFix

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Install RootRepeal

Click here - Official Rootrepeal Site, and download RootRepeal.zip. I recommend downloading to your desktop.
Fatdcuk at Malwarebytes posted a comprehensive tutorial - Self Help guide can be found here if needed.: Malwarebytes Removal and Self Help Guides.
Click RootRepeal.exe to open the scanner.
Click the Report tab, now click on Scan. A Window will open asking what to include in the scan.
Check the following items:
Drivers
Files
Processes
SSDT
Stealth Objects
Hidden Services

Click OK
Scan your C Drive (Or your current system drive) and click OK. The scan will begin. This my take a moment, so please be patient. When the scan completes, click Save Report.
Name the log RootRepeal.txt and save it to your Documents folder - (Default folder).
Paste the log into your next reply.

Anyway, Here's the RootRepeal report minus the really long bookmark folder/names, which I've replaced with "bookmark"# below (Thanks again for your help!):

I ran another report before my virus scanner could kick in and disinfect the system file. I was unable to run RootRepeal the way you described, probably due to the virus, but I was able to hit "Scan" from the "Scan" tab and then save the report. I found a suspicious file called "catchme.sys". I just downloaded Malwarebytes' FileASSASSIN to remove it, but can't find it now. How do I get rid of this thing, which I've read is a keylogger? (By the way, I used Roboform and Xmarks most of the past month while I had this infection - will the keylogger be able to read these passwords, as the user name/password fields were automatically filled?) Thanks! Here's the report:

I looked deeper into catchme and its associated infection. This seems like a nasty piece of malware that also captures traffic. Let's move straight to the HJT forum. Please follow this guide from step (6). Post a HJT log to the HJT forum and a Team member will be along to help you as soon as possible. You may wish to post a link back to this topic to see what was discussed thus far.

If you need any help with the guide, please let me know.

Thank you for your help! I've run several different anti-malware/virus programs since my last post, but I don't know if there are any infected files leftover...or if there are new ones, so I'll post that HJT log

Hello,

Now that you have posted a log here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/240274/virtumonde-catchmesys-keyloggerany-other-infections/ you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.

From this point on the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.

Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are EXTREMELY busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response but your log will be reviewed and answered as soon as possible

To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic. Good luck with your log.
