I have been experiencing a dramatic slow down of my computer speed. Opening up programs takes forever when it used to be almost instantenous. Recently when I opened up internet explorer, I noticed a message that read "waiting for about:blank" in information bar at the bottom of IE. I know that about:blank is not a good thing to have and I would like to know how to remove it. I am not sure that is the primary cause of the slowness of my computer but I am suspicious. If anyone could help me with these two issues, the slowness and about:blank, I would be greatly appreciative. Below is the report that was produced by DDS:

Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

regards, Elise

Hello holdido :thumbup2: Welcome to the BC HijackThis Log and Analysis forum. Sorry about your wait, but I will be assisting you in cleaning up your system from here on out.

I ask that you refrain from running tools other than those we suggest while we are performing the clean-up. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond the your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

I need to get a little different look at your system so please perform the following:

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop.
  • Double click the exe file.
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan.

    Posted Image
Click the image to enlarge it

  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries
[/QUOTE]

Do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

When completed please post both both logs fromGMER as well as the one from Kaspersky.

Please do not post any logs as an attachment unless asked to do so.

Thanks,

We need to execute an OTM script
  • Please download OTM by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Paste the following code under the Posted Image area. Do not include the word "Code".
    :Files
    C:\Documents and Settings\Cecilia\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\XUR280JB\index_20060808164241[1].js
    C:\Documents and Settings\Charles\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{193DDDEC-3405-433B-AD47-C331AC34681C}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Inbox.dbx
    :Commands
    [EmptyTemp]
  • Push the large Posted Image button.
  • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
  • Copy/Paste the contents under the Posted Image line here in your next reply.
  • If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

You show that you have MalwareBytes on your computer. Please open it and do an update. Then check to do a Quick Scan and allow it to proceed. Remove anything it finds and post the log it produces in your next reply along with the one from OTM.

Again, as I noted in my first reply do not post any log as an attachment unless asked to do so. Post them in the reply window. This makes them easier to work on.

Thanks! :thumbup2:

  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

The Wall,

Computer speed is definitely getting faster. It now only takes on average 3 to 5 seconds for IE start up using the quick launch bar. This may not seem that fast to you but I was waiting up to 20 to 30 seconds for IE to start even from quick launch. So thank you very much. As for about:blank, I still see IE waiting for some data from it when I look at the info bar as sites load.

Thanks,

holdido

Logs are looking good. Let's do some cleanup and updating and then run another scan.

You have two copies of Ad-Aware on your machine. One of those needs to be deleted and to tell you the truth Ad-Aware is not something we recommend anymore. You may want to remove both of them and put something like SuperAntiSpyware on your machine instead. If you decide you do so here's a link to the download.

SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users

Please uninstall older version of Adobe Reader before installing the latest version

* Click Start
* Control Panel
* Double clicking on Add/Remove Programs
* Locate older version of Adobe Reader and click on Change/Remove to uninstall it
* Click HERE to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
* Select your Windows version and click onDownload. If you are using Internet Explorer, you will receive prompts. Allow the installation to be ran and it will be installed automatically for you. If you are using other browsers, it will prompt you to save a file. Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.
* Close your Internet browser and open it again.

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image

The wall,

I've been bogged down the last couple of days but I have completed the steps that you asked me to perform. I only found one version of adAware on the add and remove the list and I uninstalled it from the computer. I also updated my version of adobe reader. I ran the ESET scan but I did not see a "export to text file". At the end of the scan this is what I saw:

Scanned Files : 14403
Infected Files : 0
Cleaned Files : 0
Total Scan Time: 7:08:17
Scan Status : Finished

I still notice the "waiting for about:blank" notification on the browser info bar

Thanks holdido

I haven't seen an about: blank infection in a long time. about:blank in most cases is just an empty start page. I don't believe it is anything to be concerned over in this instance because there is no other signs of infection.

Does everything still seem to be running OK?
