Problem: 1) When shutting down, the laptop gets stuck at the screen which shows "logging Off" and sits there hours at a time and never shuts down

2) Cannot access the internet....when you double click on the internet explorer icon, see that the cursor changes from only arrow to arrow with circle and sits there. cannot hookup the internet or open the browser.

What i have done so far:

1 ddr.scr and the following output ( For some reason, the Attach window does not open. It looks like lots of activity going on on the hard drive but no results, so no Attach.txt)

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

regards, Elise

Complete Description of the Problem(s):

1. The Laptop does not shutdown. : When you initiate shutdown, the laptop trys to shutdown, goes all the way until it displays "logging off" and sits there and even after many many hours, it is still doing that. The only way to turn it off is to press the power on button for a minute or two.

Afterward when the laptop is restarted, it boots up and comes to a screen where it gives options on wehter to start in various safe mode configurations or to start windows normally. I start the windows normally, as if you start in safe mode, it just ends up with a screen saying that this is safe mode and buld number. Thats it.

2. No matter what you do, you cannot open a browser to connect to the internet. Neither Mozilla or explorer can be opened.

3. Many other programs cannot be executed...

DDS Output

Note: One of the problems running the DDS program is that only one of the notepad out is displayed. For some reason, the attach.txt output does not work and therefore only the dds output is posted.

Okay, there's nothing in the logs.

I notice that you have SReng, what reason did you download this program?

I understand that you have no internet access so you will obviously need to transfer these programs from a removable device and not download them as will be requested in some of the instructions.

We need to scan for Rootkits with GMER
  • Please download GMER from one of the following locations, and save it to your desktop, please rename it as gamer.exe.
    • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
    • Zip Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Close any and all open programs, as this process may crash your computer.
  • Double click Posted Image or Posted Image on your desktop.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • You may see this window. If you do, click No.
    Posted Image
  • Click on Posted Image and wait for the scan to finish.
  • If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • Push Posted Image and save the logfile to your desktop.
  • Copy and Paste the contents of that file in your next post.

As well as rootkits I need to have a better look at the PC

We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from the mirror:
    [http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe]This is THE Mirror
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
OTListIt.txt <-- Will be opened
    Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
Post whatever your PC will allow you to.

Thanks :thumbup2:

1. I did not download sReng program and do not even know what it does. This laptop came to me with the program already downloaded.

2. Downloaded recommend GMER onto the desktop (to flash drive and transferred....from now on will not mention) and renamed it gamer.exe
3. Double clicked the gamer.exe
4. Clicked on scan to start the scanning process.
5. After few (like 2 -3 ) minutes, the program stopped and gav the following error in an Microsoft windows window

gamer.exe has stopped working

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close hte program and notify you if a solution is available.

Close program

What to do next .

Thanks for helping me. :thumbup2:

Something doesn't want Gmer to work. :)

Please try RootRepeal.

We Need to check for Rootkits with RootRepeal
  • Download RootRepeal from the following location and save it to your desktop:
  • Extract RootRepeal.exe from the zip archive.
  • Open Posted Image on your desktop.
  • Click the Posted Image tab.
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Check all six boxes: Posted Image
  • Push Ok
  • Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:), and press Ok.
  • Allow RootRepeal to run a scan of your system. This may take some time.
  • Once the scan completes, push the Posted Image button. Save the log to your desktop, using a distinctive name, such as RootRepeal.txt. Include this report in your next reply, please.
Thanks :thumbup2:

Hi echeckpost,

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application or, if you are using Vista, right-click and select Run As Administrator on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

Can you run OTL as well and post that log.

Thanks :thumbup2:

Hi echeckpost,

I have not had a reply from you for 3 days. Can you please tell me if you still need help with your computer as I am unable to help other members with their problems while I have your topic still open.

If you like you can PM me.

Thanks,

Oh Yes !

I am just having difficulty in preforming the directions you have asked me to do.

Here is what is completed so far:

Downloaded Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

* Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
* Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application
* When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
* When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
o Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
o Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
* Then click Finish.

I see lot of activity light for the hard Drive but thats all. The window gets minimized and cannot see what is going on.

Does it take to long?

That doesn't sound like MBAM auto-started.

Please double click the MBAM icon to run it. You should be able to see a window which shows the scan progress.

Hi echeckpost,

The MBAM is clean too.

I would say that not being able to shut down your laptop is not malware-related.

Are you still unable to open a browser and connect to the internet?
