I am having issues after doing a reformat of my Main hard drive (C: Drive). My secondary hard drive is not showing up at all now. Not in windows and not even in BIOS. I am not sure what to do as I am not familiar with doing secondary hard drives.

I have a HP Workstation xw6000 with Xeon CPU 3.20 GHz, 3.19 GHz, 2.00 GB of Ram. Before the reformat the drive was working fine and I have tons of data on it so definitly don't want to reformat THAT drive. Do I need some kinda drivers for bios or something? Not sure what to do here and any help would be appreciated.

I can't help you with the bios, but what type of drive is it? SATA drives need a driver to be installed if you're running anything earlier than Windows XP SP2 I think. A simple update should do it if that's the problem.

Western Digital 500gb SATA

WD500AAJS

i also have the S/N if needed. I think it has something to do with the fact that i dont have the SATA Drivers or something but not sure. I went to WD Site and it just gave me soemthing called Data Lifeguard tools. It doesn't recognize it either for some reason yet so not sure where to go from here.

Would updating to SP2 fix it or do i need to get drivers or something for the SATA?....

Again any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Download System Information for Windows : http://www.gtopala.com/download/siw.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click the plus next to devices then click the plus next to IDE ATA/Atapi Controllers. Copy those here.
Also, if you see SCSI Controllers, copy those here.

XW6000 Desktops came with many different controllers. Both SCSI and SATA. They also came with those in multiple versions. Raid and Non-Raid.

I'm hoping for your sake, that your system was not setup as a Raid Mirror as it may be possible that you inadvertently formatted the partition with your data that you stated you didn't want to lose.

One more question: Did you use the HP Restore to restore your xw6000?

Yeah, updating should give you the driver and that should fix the problem.

Sorry for the time it took to get back to you.

I think I may know where your hard drive went.

This portion:

is an Adaptec Ultra 320 Scsi Adapter. The driver is here: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechS...wItem=wk-9563-1

Now... with all my searching, this portion:

RAID CONTROLLER

comes back to a VIA USB controller and not a Raid controller. It is possible that it was "put" under the incorrect heading but I'm not 100% sure.

I would go into the Device manager in windows and look at what has an "exclamation" point next to it. One is going to be the Adaptec SCSI Controller.

I'm going to bet there is more than one.

Let me know what you find and good luck with the SCSI driver. LIke I said, I'm going to bet your hard drive shows back up once that driver is installed.

Its actually a VIA sata/raid controller i belive not usb and obviousley if it has a problem then your drive will not be recognised in windows.

my search came up with this:

VIA VT6421 RAID Controller:
Property ValueDevice ID PCI\VEN_1106DEV_3249SUBSYS_10AC1734REV_50\46B16D5B038F0

so i would try re-installing the drivers for the device. Also there should be a via raid utility during boot, check its set to ide/sata/standard or whatever the option is and not RAID so that it can be used as a standard drive controller without raid. Try here for the driver:

http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageI...mp;SubCatID=117

If its integrated and not a standalone board try checking in the bios for the features mentioned. And also you may have to download a vendor specific via driver if the controller is integrated to the board. So check with the manufacturers website. which is:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechS...OID=1093#113100

Look under Drivers>Storage

The adaptec scsi will have no bearing on the SATA controller and will not let you view your drive UNLESS they have a conflict with each other.

Let me know how you get on!

High500

[Edit] Just a quick note, it maybe an onboard Promise 150 raid controller, which is available from the hp site also in the same drivers-storage section, but try the via first, if that fails, download the promise one from hp, but the vendor ID is definatley showing as VIA[/Edit]
