Hi there. Two days ago my son decided to use my PC to play World of Warcraft. He landed on a site that let 2 viruses into my PC. The first was the System Security Virus. We were able to kill that one. The second didn't appear until the next day and is repeatedly ID'd by Adaware as win32 trojan TDSS. Problem is that Adaware can neither kill or quarantine the virus.

I have attempted to download various fixes on both the Windows desktop & in Safe Mode but they will not run. I have tried running/installing off of a flash drive as well with no luck. Also, for some unknown reason I cannot type when in Safe Mode. My System Restore points have been erased. And when I attempt to search in Google for solutions the links that I click on direct me to sites that have nothing to do with the virus.

So basically things are a mess. Can you offer some advice/guidance? Perhaps I can use the Recovery Console to fix the problems?

BTW, I also tried to download HijackThis & the install program won't run either.

Many thanks in advance.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (v1.38) and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Some types of malware will disable Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and other security tools. If MBAM will not install, try renaming it first.
  • Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file file and rename it to mysetup.exe.
  • Double-click on mysetup.exe to start the installation.
  • If that did not work, then try renaming and changing the file extension. <- click this link if you do not see the file extension
  • Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file, rename it to mysetup and change the .exe extension to .scr, .com, .pif, or .bat.
  • Then double-click on mysetup.scr (or whatever extension you renamed it) to begin installation.
If after installation, MBAM will not run, open the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder in Program Files.
  • Right-click on mbam.exe, rename it to myscan.exe.
  • Double-click on myscan.exe to launch the program.
  • If that did not work, then try renaming and change the .exe extension in the same way as noted above.
  • Double-click on myscan.scr (or whatever extension you renamed it) to launch the program.
If using Windows Vista, refer to How to Change a File Extension in Windows Vista.

Tried this & Malwarebytes will download & install but will not open on the desktop or in safe mode. Tried renaming it with no luck either. Suggestions?

Thanks for the quick reply to my post, too.

Please download RootRepeal Rootkit Detector and save it to your Desktop.
alternate download link 1
  • Disconnect from the Internet as your system will be unprotected while using this tool.
  • Close all programs and temporarily disable your anti-virus, Firewall and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
  • Click this link to see a list of such programs and how to disable them.
  • Create a new folder on your hard drive called RootRepeal (C:\RootRepeal) and extract (unzip) RootRepeal.zip. (click here if you're not sure how to do this. Vista users refer to this link.)
  • Open the folder and double-click on RootRepeal.exe to launch it. If using Vista, right-click and Run as Administrator...
  • When the program opens, click the Report tab at the bottom, then click the Scan button.
  • In the Select Scan, dialog What do you want to include in the scan?, check all the boxes.
    Posted Image
  • Click OK.
  • In the Select Drives, dialog Please select drives to scan: select all drives showing, then click OK.
  • The scan can take some time to finish. Do not use the computer while the scan is running.
  • When the scan has completed, a list of files will be generated in the RootRepeal window.
  • Click on the Save Report button and save it as rootrepeal.txt to your desktop or the same location where you ran the tool from.
  • Open rootrepeal.txt in Notepad and copy/paste its contents in your next reply.
  • Exit RootRepeal and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.
Note: If RootRepeal cannot complete a scan and results in a crash report, try repeating the scan in "Safe Mode".

Sorry for the delay in responding to your post. The viruses on my PC are preventing me from logging on to the Internet. And for some reason in safe mode I cannot type so I am stuck there as well. I am at work on my work PC at the moment. When I get home I will revisit my Internet issue on my PC & see if I can get the info that you requested to you.

Thanks for your help & patience.

Again sorry for the delay. We were able to get the PC to work again. Currently I am using SAFE mode. My son attempted to correct the problem via Internet help from another site but was unsuccessful (just found this out). So I am back in the game a bit late.

So with that being said what can I provide to you to assess the problem? Should I follow your previous instructions in your post or do you have new ones that I should follow? And should I run in SAFE or NORMAL mode?

Thank you.

Should I follow your previous instructions in your post...?

Yes. Try normal mode first. If it crashed, try safe mode.

RootRepeal ran fine in Normal Mode.

Whatever was done previously seems to have eliminated the pop-ups, at least for the moment. An empty WIN32 folder opens upon startup in Normal but it is empty (i.e. flashlight scans, nothing there).

Here is the log that you requested:

Some infections are difficult to remove completely because of their morphing characteristics which allows the malware to regenerate itself. Sometimes there is hidden piece of malware (i.e. rootkit) which has not been detected by your security tools that protects malicious files and registry keys so they cannot be permanently deleted. Disinfection will probably require the use of more powerful tools than we recommend in this forum. Before that can be done you will need you to create and post a DDS/HijackThis log for further investigation.

Please read the pinned topic titled "Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log". If you cannot complete a step, then skip it and continue with the next. In Step 6 there are instructions for downloading and running DDS which will create a Pseudo HJT Report as part of its log.

When you have done that, post your log in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum, NOT here, for assistance by the HJT Team Experts. A member of the Team will walk you through, step by step, on how to clean your computer. If you post your log back in this thread, the response from the HJT Team will be delayed because your post will have to be moved. This means it will fall in line behind any others posted that same day.

Start a new topic, give it a relevant title and post your log along with a brief description of your problem, a summary of any anti-malware tools you have used and a summary of any steps that you have performed on your own. An expert will analyze your log and reply with instructions advising you what to fix. After doing this, we would appreciate if you post a link to your log back here so we know that your getting help from the HJT Team.

Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your post or make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.
