Can an admin delete my last post as i have realised the problem is with the avi file and not the folder

After some searching i am unsure to whether this problem should be occuring with all video files or not

Also that the problem seems to be greater wth SP3, which i am running, if i disable the DEP for windows explorer will that do the trick?

thank you for your help

I'm not sure why DEP would concern itself with any data file, let alone a singular one.

Done any malware scans lately?

i regularly do updates and scans and have no malware on the computer:
-malwarebytes
-avira antivirus personal

the funny thing is that the problem was with a different avi file at first after deleting the file it seems to have moved to another one. Would a hijak this lof help.

I have tried turning dep off for windows explorer but all that happens is that i dont get a error message but am sent straight to desktop.

The error essage appears when its in thumbnail view or clicked on (suspect because of the display in the left panel). If i quickly click it and do something like open or cut it it will open and get pasted but the error message will still appear.

I was thinking more of routine scans, not a HJT log.

Please try a couple of these free online scanners to see if anything has slipped by your protection:
(Be advised that some of these scanners will pickup things in "quarantine" from other anti-virus programs - so review the results carefully)

If you find that you're infected (or the scan doesn't complete or closes unexpectedly), let us know. If you seem to be infected, I will then suggest that your post be moved to website malware area, where it can receive proper attention.

I guess that I'm still troubled by the fact that you think DEP alerts on data files...my understanding is that it alerts on programs, not data files.

the error appears no other time but when accessing that one video file, i doubt there are any viruses as i do regular full scans with avira and malare every week and whenever i get suspicion. This problem has existed for over a few months and i have only now decided to persue it due to it moving to another file

i will try doin those online scans and get back to u.

Thanks

Just a little update then:
- I can open the video with no errors through media player
- I tried resaving the file and instead of the dep error i got a normal error message

And as you said b4 error is 4 a programme and not a data file well i think:
- Its the programme that shows thumbnails for the file (explorer)
-cause if i put the view for the folder in thumbnail the error occurs as soon as i enter the folder,
-whereas if its tile vie the error will occur when clicking the file which in turn tries to display a preview in the left column
-or going to properties and display tab to change the icon

Srry if im repeating i dont wnt to leave anythin out that can help
