Some major hard disk manufacturing companies offer free software on their websites which can be used to clone a drive of their make (Western Digital).

There are also some freeware options:

XXclone !

http://www.xxclone.com/xxclone.zip

Download, unzip, install

Hook the HD you want to clone to up as a Slave [or just install if SATA]
Format to the file system you are going to use.

Open XXClone
On the first page make sure you have:

Source Volume C
Target volume = drive you are cloning to

Click on the Cool Tools tab
Click on Make Bootable
Put checkmarks in all 3 boxes
Click Start
When the box opens click Yes
When the blue progress line is done click Exit
Click Start
Click Yes
Do the clone

When you are done set the cloned drive to Master & either set the old drive to Slave or remove it & keep for a backup.

The XXClone online manual is here ,

BTW, I don't think Vista will clone , XP & below.

The only thing I've found that doesn't clone is AVG anti-virus.
I just uninstall it before I clone & reinstall when I'm done.
