320g hd

i bought a 320g seagate hd for my laptop i installed it and windows with no problems. very soon after i downloaded a virus and since i didn't have alot of info on the drive i just reformatted and installed again. but now the hd only shows up as a 298g. any ideas as to why?

This is normal. Hard drive manufacturers specify drive size using Gigabytes and Windows reports drive size in Gibibytes. One is a power of 10, the other is a power of 2.

If you enter 320 in the Gigabyte side of this converter:

http://www.unitjuggler.com/convert-memory-...-GB-to-GiB.html

you'll see that 320 Gigabytes is 298 Gibibytes.

It has long been a source of confusion, and has even provoked a lawsuit:
