Hi. I hope someone can help me. I have run several sweeps of Ad-Aware in both normal and safe mode and it detects a trojan32.win.tdss which it is unable to remove. At first I was not even able to boot properly in normal mode. Windows would load just past the splash and then explorer wouldn't open so I'd be left with a black screen and my mouse cursor. Couldn't ctrl+alt+del to open the taskmanager and run explorer manually. IE also seems to load with explorer which it shouldn't do - it shows up in the task manager processes (IEXPLORE) but there are no open windows - I suspect my virus may be opening it for some reason.

The other symptoms I'm having is that occasionally when I click a link in google or any other webpage it may redirect to a windowsclick.com spam site. I can get around that by either refreshing the page and trying again or manually Copy/pasting the link into the URL bar.

I tried running MBAM and Combofix after reading similar symptoms on the board, but neither would run. I even rebooted in Ubuntu and ran a scan on avast on a mounted version of my windows partition (C:). I rebooted after this but the symptoms remained but I could run windows in normal mode.

I may also have messed around with my services.msc too much and started or stopped some service I shouldn't have - but I doubt it. Included below the DDS log is my services log (from the bat file made by bleepingcomputer).

When I ran DDS I got an error report for "Sort Utility" which then closed. I'm not sure if this is relevent. It showed up twice. Once near the beginning of the scan and once at the end. I do not know what the Sort Utility is.

DDS Log:

I forgot. Here is the getservice.bat log - I'm not sure if you will need it or not. If there is a link to somewhere that says what services should and shouldn't be started / stopped / auto / disabled etc I would really love that.

I think I managed to fix the problem. I mostly followed what was told to the person in this thread http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/236001/infected-win32trojantdssothers/

I finally managed to get MBAM to run by using the XUAC_Fix.zip. When my computer restarted I was able to run MBAM and I was going to run combofix however I was reluctant to because it detected PC Tools AV realtime monitor running even though it's not installed - I used to have it, so I think it was detecting some old process but I didn't want to risk it.

Everything appears to be working fine. I've installed Nod32 for virus scanning. I have MBAM running in realtime protection mode and I have ZoneAlarm firewall active and running.

Should I still run combofix? Can I ignore the warning it shows about PC Tools AV?

Another thing I'd like to note, for others attempting to diagnose this issue, is that

1. IExplore shows up in the process list on startup, despite having no windows open.
2. Explorer showed up as using about 100MB of RAM in the task manager processes list.
