Hello and thanks to whoever takes this topic.

I use Firefox and I am running Windows XP with Service Pack 3.

My problem is that when I click on a link on a Google search page, the link is redirected to various ad sites. If I go back to the original Google search page and re-click the same link it will usually go through to the proper site, although it sometimes requires a third click before I get to where I want to go.

When it is redirecting to an advertising site, I can - briefly - see the address, "search-tracker.net" displayed at the bottom of the Firefox page (in that area where you can see the address of a link if you hover over it with your mouse).

What I've done so far to try to fix this problem:

banned cookies from search-tracker.net,
tried to run anti-malware software, including: Advanced Spywear Remover (which removed about 80 instances of malware or spyware, but not the one I am trying to fix), PCcillian (which would not run at all) and Malware Bytes (again, would not run after installation).

What I've done to prepare for your help:

Gone through the steps to ensure my XP firewall is engaged (it is)
Run DDS (see report below and attached zip file)

I will be away from my computer from Thursday, June 25 to Sunday, June 28. Please be assured that if you write during that time I will respond on Monday morning (unless I am called to attend a birth, which is possible, in which case I'll get back to you as soon as I am able. Please be aware that a birth can take up to three days). Any replies that I receive before Thursday morning I will respond to right away. Thanks for your understanding.

Hi Tea,

Thanks for responding. I have downloaded both HiJackThis.exe and HJTInstall.exe but neither will run (the installer went through the install process but the installed program did not run). This happened with Trend Micro when I tried to run Housecall a few days ago too.

Can you think of a way to get around this or another company whose software might not be recognised by the malware I have on my system? (I am assuming that the malware itself is blocking Trend Micro stuff from working, but I realise that I could be quite wrong about that.)

Thanks again.

Hello there,

Yes, this is more common than you might think. Malware "sees" what you're trying to do and will block a lot of the programs needed to clean it out of there. Rename HijackThis.exe to analyze.exe and try it again. :thumbup2:

Hello,

Great, you got it! :thumbup2:

The 017s in that log represent a DNS changer. Since you're having trouble with MBAM too, let's go to something stronger, then we'll revisit MBAM. :)

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

If ComboFix will not run the first time, then rename ComboFix.exe to Doulatron.exe and try it again. :)

Thanks,
tea

Hello,

You're welcome. :thumbup2:

Looks much better, but there's still one entry I don't like. So try MBAM again and post the report for me in your reply, along with a fresh HijackThis log. Also please let me know how it's running now. :)

Thanks,
tea

MBAM is offering to remove selected files; should I go ahead with that?

Thanks so much for all of your help Tea. Everything seems to be back to normal. If things look ok with this HJT log, can you give me parting words about a) keeping free of such problems and :thumbup2: where to find info (for people who know absolutely nothing) on backing up your computer?

Hello,

Good to know, and you're most welcome. :thumbup2: Yes, that entry is gone now, and everything looks good.

Some good reading here: http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

And this is what I tell everyone, unedited edition :) :

Below I have included a number of recommendations on how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously! These few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

Regularly go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. You should also turn on the Windows automatic update feature.

You should definitely maintain a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or Outpost. I use Comodo on my own system and really like it. http://comodo.com
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. A lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Please make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

If you have any other question, please do ask. :)

Take care!

I will do these things as you recommend, Tea. Thanks.

Oh, and do you think that I should get rid of HJT and MBAM so that I don't do anything bad by mistake? I can always download them again later if need be I suppose.
