Awhile back I had a major computer problem and after many days of trying to fix I did a system restore. Before he restore my CDRom stopped working. After system restore my CDRom is not recognized in device manager or explorer.

I can load a cd and it will take it in and the green light lights but that is all.

Windows XP Media Edition - SP3- Had XP Pro before and wish it again.

Could someone confirm or abolish my thoughts of a bad drive? Bad cable? Possible software issue?

It sounds like the CD drive has failed.
If it appears to work when a disk is put in it but does not start the disk more then likely the read head has failed.

If it doesn't show in My Computer I would check the cable connections at the drive & mtherboard.
Usually a bad drive that is getting power will show in My Computer if the cable is good.

I've been repairing computers for years & have only replaced a couple of cables that simply quit working but it does happen.
