My Dell 400 is getting extremely slow in loading. Taking over a minute of just looking at a blank screen before the desktop fianally pops up.
It USED to be much faster.
I've performed Disc Cleanup and Defrag.
But slow load time is still there.

2.40 gigahertz Intel Core2 Quad Q6600

Board: Dell Inc. 0GN723
Bus Clock: 266 megahertz
BIOS: Dell Inc. 1.0.11 01/31/2008

This is my hijackthis log file.

ANY help will be appriciated greatly.
Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

If I don't respond within 2 days, please feel free to PM me.
Please don't ask for help via PM. The forums are there for a reason. Please post in the forums so others may benefit as well.

I believe I followed the instructions properly. It did say something about logging off the internet, disable AVG virus etc, and run the test again.
So I have the 4 files.
The top two are with the internet connected and the "2" next two are without the internet.

I timed the amount of time it takes to go from the wormhole (xp desktop screen pattern) to adding the desktop icons is now 77 seconds. It used to be 1 second or less.

Thank You.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer.

My name is Syler, I will be helping you to solve your Malware issues. Whilst I am helping you, I would
be grateful if you would note the following:
  • Please do not run other tools or scans unless I ask you to and follow all the steps I give you, in order.
  • Copy and paste all logs requested in you reply, Do not attach them unless asked too.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask before you proceed with my instructions.
  • Please continue to work with me, until I tell you your machine appears to be clean. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If I do not hear back from you within 5 days of my last post, then this topic will be closed.

Peer-to-Peer Programs Warning
Your log shows that you are using so called peer-to-peer or file-sharing programs (in your case Bittorent). These programs allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world cyber crime has come to an enormous dimension and any means is used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of the malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it.

It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care. Some further readings on this subject, along the included links, are as follows: File-Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer and Risks of File-Sharing Technology.

It is also important to note that sharing entertainment files and proprietary software infringes the copyright laws in many countries over the world and you are putting yourself at risk of being indicted through organizations watching over the rights of the authors of such files (i.e. the RIAA for music files, or the MPAA for movie files in the USA) or the authors of the files themselves.

Naturally there are also legal ways to use these services, such as downloading Linux distributions or office suites such as "Open Office."

It is your decision whether or not you wish to keep your program(s). However, please refrain from using them until your computer has been declared clean.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)" JRE 6 Update 14.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u14-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
-- If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Next

The MBAM log is the one you posted :thumbup2: but what about the Rsit logs, log.txt and info.txt? did you run Rsit as I asked,
if so both text files should be here C:\rsit if not run Rsit and post the logs.

Are you having any other problems other than a slow computer?

No the computer seems to work as normal.
Its just taking forever to boot up now.

We have an older Dell with XP at home With 1 Gig of Ram and a Pent4 that boots up in seconds.
This one used to be quick on booting up, but the past 2-3 weeks it takes a couple of minutes.

Cold start with the computer off.
Press on button at 0:00 seconds
DELL is displayedat 0:05 seconds
XP is displayed at 0:12 seconds
Welcome is displayed at 0:40 seconds
Wormhole Screen (on XP) is diplayed at 1:10 (1 minute 10 seconds)
The desktop Icons appear at 2:30 (2 minties 30 seconds)
The Hourglass (that is with the Mouse pointer) disappears at 2:50
Its the time between Wormhole display and the Icons appearing that used to take seconds now is over a minute.
That's were the problem is.

Thanks Tom

Hi Tom, Not really seeing to much wrong here, lets do a few more checks.

Please copy the contents of the code box below, open notepad and paste it there. On the top toolbar in notepad select file, then save as.
In the box that opens type in Regfix.reg for the file name. Right below that click the down arrow in the line for "save as" and select
all files. Save this to your desktop and close notepad.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"BitTorrent DNA"=-

NOTICE: This file was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine.
Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system

Now locate Regfix.reg on your desktop and double click it. Select Yes when it prompts you then Ok

Next

Download and Run Rooter SD

Please download Rooter.exe and save it to your desktop
  • Double-click it to start the tool. If you are using Vista, please right-click and choose Run As Administrator
  • Alow it to run when you get a Security Warning
  • A black Command Windows will open saying: "Please Wait..."
  • It will now begin to scan, please be paitent. The scan should not take more than 2 minutes
  • A Notepad file containing the report will open soon. It can also be found at %systemdrive%\Rooter.txt
  • Please post the contents of that log in your next reply
Next

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Then please post back here with the following:
  • Rooter.txt
  • Kaspersky report
  • New Rsit log
Thanks

You did the Kaspersky scan correctly :thumbup2: it just isn't detecting anything and I can't see anything in your logs.
I don't think your problems are malware related so I am going to close this topic, I would suggest you have a read of
this topic. Slow computer and if it's still running slow post in the XP forum.
