Whoa, first of all: I'm really stupid. I posted my topic in the wrong forum, so it got moved. I probably was too fast on clicking the "NEW TOPIC" button, sorry for that.

Anyways, I cp'ed the original text.

I'd be very grateful if you could help me with several problems on my Windows XP Media Center Edition (SP2). I suddenly ran into problems with redirecting to obscure websites when I clicked on search results in my browsers (Iron, Firefox, IE). I also had a problem with my OS auto-logging me off every time I'd start it, even in safemode. I ran a virus scan (KAV and Avira) from a Linux boot cd and found infections TR.Zpack, TDSS and Skynet, which were cleaned by those scanners. I still had a problem with my OS auto-logging me off, so I used Ultimate Boot CD to manually edit my registry and found out, that the userinit.exe was hijacked with a "debug" program, which started everytime the userinit.exe was started.
I deleted the entry in the registry and now I can use my system and I don't get any redirections, but I still have the feeling that something is not quite alright, because sometimes my internet connections just stops working.

I used several other programs to scan my computer, including a KAV Online Scanner (unfortunately I didn't keep the log, can do it again, if requested) but I am not sure if I can interpret the logs in the correct way. Would you please be so kind to help me with my problem?

First, I'll start with a DDS log as the forum guidelines ask me to do.

P.S.: Why does my IRON Browser (based on Chromium) not show me the attachment option? I had to use FF instead. :thumbup2:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Hello there,

thanks for caring. I've included a description of all the measures I took in my first post and since then, I did not take any other measures to "clean" my system. So far everything is running fine and as I wrote in my first post, neither KAV online scanner, nor my Avira Antivir Premium, detect infections anymore, but I still feel unsafe and I am not sure if I can interpret the log files of the various tools I used during trying to clean my system in the correct way. So here is my updated DDS log.

I also included a new attach.txt as well. My problem is, that I am not sure which dll, sys, dat files and so on are needed/secure. You guys definetely have a better understanding of those log-files than I do, so if you have the time to help me, I'd be very grateful.

By the way, RIP, Michael. For a long time, you were the greatest.

Hi,

Uninstall this vulnerable Java:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

Uninstall old Adobe Reader versions and get the latest one (9.1 + 9.1.2 update) here or get Foxit Reader here. Make sure you don't install toolbar if choose Foxit Reader! You may also check free readers introduced here.

Delete c:\windows\system32\kqwabnmapnrup file.

Reboot and post a fresh dds.txt log.

There're signs of ComboFix run there. Do you still have ComboFix.exe file somewhere on your hard drive?

Hey there,

thanks for helping me! I did as you requested and uninstalled Adobe (I already used Foxit), uninstalled the old Java, deleted the mentioned file.

You're correct, I used combofix a while ago, before I came to this forum. After the use, I deleted the combofix.exe.

Here's my updated dds log:

By the way, what about the file STPD.sys? I used Daemon Tools a while ago, but uninstalled it. Yet the file remains on my computer and Avira always gives a warning because it couldn't open it during a scan. Is it safe to delete it?

You're correct, I used combofix a while ago, before I came to this forum. After the use, I deleted the combofix.exe.

Please re-download ComboFix.exe from one of the download links here to your desktop.

Then lets uninstall ComboFix properly:
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.

Otherwise the things look quite ok :thumbup2:

By the way, what about the file STPD.sys? I used Daemon Tools a while ago, but uninstalled it. Yet the file remains on my computer and Avira always gives a warning because it couldn't open it during a scan. Is it safe to delete it?

Please see "How can I remove SPTD driver on 32-bit OS?" -question here.

Woohoo! Thanks!

I feel better now, but one question remains: how the heck did my sys get this infection in the first place? I always thought that I used brain.exe (as much as necessary) and that my security software and configured services would keep me safe, but really, I have no idea how it happened...maybe I should have used only Firefox with NoScript and not use Iron anymore?

Anyways, if it happens again, I'll sure be back crying for help :thumbup2:

Thanks again!

You're welcome :thumbup2:

That's a good question which I can't unfortunately give 100% sure answer. Dubious websites and downloads have traditionally been some of those possible sources.

I haven't used Chrome or browsers based on it so can't say anything about SRWare Iron. Firefox with NoScript & Adblock plus have been good combination for me :)

I guess I'll stick to that combination, too.

Thanks again and bye!
