hi guys.. i got a new toshiba laptop a few months ago, and for some reason, my internet is excruciatingly slow.. speed tests show it at 1200kbs, whereas the average on the highspeed cable i have is supposed to be MUCH higher

also i'm pretty sure it's the computer, because even my iphone is running 2500kbs over wifi..

before you ask, windows firewall is off, and i'm using norton's firewall, but the settings seem to be okay (i.e. nothing is blocked). i'm running vista, DC, 2GB RAM..

i'm not sure what the hell is going on here, but you can bet it's frustrating when an iphone works faster than a $1000 laptop.. any other ideas here?? thanks..

hello

has your laptop always been slow?
what is vista DC?
have you defraged?
have you updated to sp2?
are you wireless? have you tried using a hard wire directly to modem?
what browser do you use?
have you cleaned temp files?

norton is a resource PIG !!
2 gb RAM is on the low end for vista (should be fine for browsing & such)

I use Avast, and the Window's FW I like to game and other AV's like to block servers and interfere.

Keny is right about Norton. I really despise it. I had it when I first built this computer but Norton HATES Vista64 and always tries to crash it. If you decide to change, make sure you use the Norton removal tool. Norton can be as hard as a trojan to get rid of otherwise.

If you decide to use AVG during the install when the option is offered do a "Custom" install.
When the options are presented remove the checkmarks from the boxes by "Link Scanner" & "Additional Languages" .

I use AVG, Malwarebytes , & Zone Alarm free firewall.

I think AVG is very good [been using it for years', have tried the others]

With zone alarm according to the online firewall testers this computer does not exist on the internet.

! thing about the ZA firewall, all settings have to be on "medium" or the computer won't go online.

I use ZoneAlarm and have never had my settings set as low as medium. I have mine set to high and have no problems getting online
