Hello and thank you for your help!

I installed a new 80 gig hard drive in 12/08 after my old one crashed. I made two 40 gig partitions at that time.

In the last couple of months, I've noticed a general slowing down of my Internet usage and general speed of loading any program. I especially notice that I cannot play any Internet video such as Youtube anymore - it will start, but grind to a halt and the CPU is at 100% usage. I also notice that the CPU usage is generally high - in the 50% to 100% range - a lot. I used to have AVG Free, but it seemed that when it ran scans it would additionally grind processes to a halt with 100% usage, and I've deleted that, unsure what to do next. I know, stupid.

I have deleted extra files, freeing up 15G ish of space. I have opened my laptop and cleaned out the dust. I have downloaded an updated display adapter driver. I have optimized my settings for better performance visually (I have XP). I have tried to go into the startup programs and stop what was unnecessary. No change.

This is the worst thing, though! I realized about a week ago that my hard drive said that is had 29.something G total space. This is when I KNOW I installed an 80 G drive 7 months ago! And today I noticed it was down to 29.0 G. My hard drive is shrinking! I know there must be something bad on here, but I don't know what.

Thank you for any information you can give me!! Here's the DDS log:

Thanks for reopening this!

It appears that the hard drive space is holding steady, 29.2 G, but everything else is the same. It's an 80 G hard drive installed last Dec., I made 2 40G partitions on it myself. I still can't play internet videos, they grind to a halt playing very very slowly at first. Video files saved to my hard drive play fine. I notice when I run Task Manager that I often have 37%, 50%, 80% of CPU being used, then it goes back down to 5% intermittently.

Thank you so much for your help again!

Hi again,

There's nothing showing on the logs but I'm not convinced. Let's run some scans and see if we can find a culprit for the CPU hogging.

I don't see an Anti Virus Program running on your machine, although I do see traces of AVG.
  • Download and install an antivirus program, and make sure that you keep it updated
New viruses come out every minute, so it is essential that you have the latest signatures for your antivirus program to provide you with the best possible protection from malicious software.
Two good antivirus programs free for non-commercial home use are Avast! and Antivir
Note: You should only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as impairing the performance of your PC.
Next

We need to scan for Rootkits with GMER
  • Please download GMER from one of the following locations, and save it to your desktop, please rename it as gamer.exe.
    • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
    • Zip Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Close any and all open programs, as this process may crash your computer.
  • Double click Posted Image or Posted Image on your desktop.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • You may see this window. If you do, click No.
    Posted Image
  • Click on Posted Image and wait for the scan to finish.
  • If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • Push Posted Image and save the logfile to your desktop.
  • Copy and Paste the contents of that file in your next post.

Then

We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from the mirror:
    [http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe]This is THE Mirror
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
OTListIt.txt <-- Will be opened
    Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
Thanks :thumbup2:

Okay, here are the logs (sorry it took a few days - holiday stuff):

I put AVG Free on here again. I have installed and taken it off a few times because it seemed like it was slowing down internet use a lot, but I'm guessing AVG itself isn't the real problem. So, it's back on.

Gamr log:

The scanners aren't showing anything, bigbird183. :)

Let's try something a bit more invasive.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application or, if you are using Vista, right-click and select Run As Administrator on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

Thanks :thumbup2:

Okay, I did the scan, 3 items were shown as infected, and I removed them. Log is below.

However - this is the second restart since, and the startup of the computer and of programs is verrrry slow each time.

Any suggestions for that? Thanks again!

Hi bigbird183,

The MBAM items were policy changes that malware may have changed.

You still have a slow running PC and they may or may not be connected with this.

Let's try an online scan.

Please run a BitDefender Online Scan
  • Click I Agree to agree to the EULA.
  • Allow the ActiveX control to install when prompted.
  • Click Click here to scan to begin the scan.
  • Please refrain from using the computer until the scan is finished. This might take a while to run, but it is important that nothing else is running while you scan.
  • When the scan is finished, click on Click here to export the scan results.
  • Save the report to your desktop so you can post it in your next reply.
Thanks :thumbup2:

Hi m0le,

I have a problem in that I will be out of town and away from my computer from pretty much now until the 12th. I will run the online scan as soon as I can, but I understand if you have to close the topic in the interest of time. Perhaps when I get back there will be a chance to reopen it?

Thanks a bunch for all your help thus far! I very much appreciate it.

Hi bigbird183,

That's not a problem. Thanks for letting me know, I will keep the topic open and I will bump it on the 15th if you haven't replied.
