So that first post was my DDS log, with attachment.

Here is my regular HijackThis log as an attachment.

As for the issue, it started sometime around the beginning of June or the end of May, 2009.

The computer experienced general slowdown, as well as larger spikes of slowdown.

My winlogon.exe process seemed to be eating up about half of my CPU on a consistent basis.

I tried running my anti-spyware tool (uniblue spyeraser) with little success. I ran AVG Antivirus but it was unable to remove a few of the problems it found. I will try to figure out exactly what those problems were, but I seem to be having difficulty opening AVG. This difficulty was first noticed after I tried using a system restore to my earliest restore point, which seemed to make the slowdown worse. I then used system restore to reach a restore point between my oldest and newest, may 1st, and it seems to have returned the issue to its original state.

So now, I turn to HijackThis, which lead me to this forum.

I would appreciate any help you can give and will do my best to periodically check this topic and follow any instructions given.

Thank you.

Merged posts. ~ OB

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

The immediate problem has been resolved, I was told to delete:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: sdqnike - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\sdqnike.dll

Which ended the CPU usage spikes.

If you have any advice on preventative measures and computer security, that would be awesome.

But otherwise thank you for spending your time for me. Thank you greatly. I'll be back with any future trouble.

Hi,

One recommended action is to uninstall P2P file sharing programs. P2P networks are used to spread malicious infections nowadays.

Also, please uninstall these vulnerable Javas:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
Java™ 6 Update 5
Java™ 6 Update 7
Java™ SE Development Kit 6 Update 5

Uninstall Adobe Reader 7.0.9 and update version 8.1.2 with update 8.1.6 here

Are you using any antivirus programs? I see McAfee related signs there but none seems to be active.
