Hi Guys,

Would really appreciate some help with this one. Google installer and Google update messages keep appearing. I removed everything google that I could find but things are still coming up and its making my computer less than snail paced!! None of my anti-virus programs are picking anything up but I am beginning to think AVG sucks! It seems it also inhibits certain virus scanners from running e.i. reboots my PC! :)

Here is my Hijack this log.

Hi superdan86,

Welcome to BC HijackThis forum. I am farbar. I am going to assist you with your problem.

Please refrain from making any changes to your system (updating Windows, installing applications, removing files, etc.) from now on as it might prolong handling your log and make the job for both of us more difficult.
  • Please run Notepad (start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad) and copy and paste the text in the code box into a new file:

    @ECHO OFF
    sc stop gupdate1c99c26c6f41006
    sc delete gupdate1c99c26c6f41006
    sc stop gusvc
    sc delete gusvc
    rd /s /q "D:\Program Files\Google\Common\Google Updater"
    rd /s /q "D:\Program Files\Google"
    • Go to the File menu at the top of the Notepad and select Save as.
    • Select save in: desktop
    • Fill in File name: remove.bat
    • Save as type: All file types (*.*)
    • Click save.
    • Close the Notepad.
    • Locate and double-click remove.bat on the desktop. If everything goes well the remove.bat opens and disappears after removing the service.
  • Please copy and paste a fresh Hijackthis log to your reply.

We removed Google services and folders. :thumbup2:
  • Please open HiJackThis and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below (if present):

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
    O18 - Filter hijack: text/html - (no CLSID) - (no file)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, including browsers, so that nothing other than HijackThis is open, then click Fix Checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

  • You have still Google search as your start page. In case you wanted to replace it:

Open Internet Explorer. Find another web page to set as your start page. Then go to Tools menu, under General tab under Home Page section press Use current button. Click Apply and OK.

  • Please tell me if you have any question.

Cheers again farbar!

I have done this as requested! Is there anything further I should do?

Just so you know I am still getting re-directed to different sites when clicking on the finds from my google searches?

Your help is most appreciated!

This is the first time you mention redirection. :thumbup2:

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Information on A/V control HERE)
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please copy and paste the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

I followed the steps below but when double clicking on combofix on my desktop it is not beginning any kind of GUI. The process combofix.exe is running but nothing comes up! As you are beginning to tell my computer is dying :D

Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete), under Processes tab select combofix.exe and press End Process.

Then rename ComboFix to super.exe and run it again.

We need to run ComboFix. Before that please go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall: Windows Desktop Search
Then remove this folder: D:\Program Files\Windows Desktop Search
After we are done you can install the program again.

After that remove your copy of ComboFix and follow the instruction on post # 6 to download and run ComboFix. If it did not run you may rename it.

Lets try this one:

Download the trial version of Your Uninstaller! 2008 (Free Fix)Install it and run it.
Under Modules select Uninstaller.
Highlight Windows Desktop Search and press Uninstall.
Let it remove all the files and folders and anything it founds.
If the computer asked for a reboot cleck "NO".
After it finished remove the folder I mentioned before if it is still there.
