Hello donnakay12,

You have a nasty CWS infection on your computer. We will use a fix courtesy of LineOFire.

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
  • Prepare CWShredder for use:
    • Download CWShredder.
    • Save CWShredder.exe to a convenient location.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
  • Prepare AboutBuster for use:
    • Download AboutBuster.
    • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
    • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
    • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
    • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update".
    • You should not run the program yet so click "Exit".
  • Prepare cwsserviceremove.reg for use:
    • Download cwsserviceremove.zip.
    • Unzip the contents of cwsserviceremove.zip (cwsserviceremove.reg) to your desktop.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
Click Start. Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.
  • Run CWShredder:
    • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
    • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
    • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
    • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
  • Remove the offending service:
    • Double-click on cwsserviceremove.reg you downloaded earlier.
    • When it asks you to merge the information to the registry click "Yes".
  • Run AboutBuster and save the logs:
    • Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click OK at the directions prompt.
    • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
    • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
    • It will begin to your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
    • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I need a copy of it.
  • Clean out temporary files:
    • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
    • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
    • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
    • Click "OK" to remove them.
    • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
  • Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.
  • Free TrendMicro Housecall scan:
    • Vist the TrendMicro Housecall website.
    • Select your country from the drop-down list and click "Go".
    • Choose "Yes" at the ActiveX Security Warning prompt.
    • Please wait while the Housecall engine is updated.
    • Select the drives to be scanned by placing a check in their respective boxes.
    • Check the "Auto Clean" box.
    • Click "SCAN" in order to begin scanning your system.
    • Please be patient while Housecall scans your system for malicious files.
    • If not auto-cleaned, remove anything it finds.
    • Click "Close" to exit the Housecall scanner.
    • Choose "Yes" at the HouseCall message prompt.
  • Prepare your reply:
    • Please post a fresh HijackThis log
    • Please post the AboutBuster log.
    • Please note any complications you had.

If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

The first thing I need you to do is download the file from here:

Getservices.zip

Extract the file to the c:\ drive.
Then navigate to the c:\getservices and double-click on the getservices.bat file.

You may want to print out these directions as the Internet will not be available. Please continue with the next step if you run into a problem with the current one. Just be sure to let us know what the problem was when you reply.

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files.
Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Please download About:Buster from here: About:Buster Download. Once it is downloaded extract it to
c:\aboutbuster. We will use that program later in this process.

How to Reboot into Safe Mode
tap F8 key during reboot, until the boot menu appears...use the arrow keys to choose "Safe Mode" from the menu......,then press the "Enter" key.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode and follow these steps:

Step 1:

Click on start, then control panel, then administrative programs, then services. Look for a service called Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper.
Double click on the that service and click stop and then set the startup to disabled.

Step 2:

Press control-alt-delete to get into the task manager and end the follow processes if they exist:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nethi.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wingg.exe

Step 3:
While in Safe Mode and close all programs and windows (close browser/explorer windows) and run hijackthis.
Put a checkmark next to each of these entries and press the fix button when ready:

Step 4:

Go to My Computer and double-click C.
Go to the Tools menu and select 'Folder Options'.
On the 'View' tab select 'show hidden files and folders' and deselect (uncheck) 'hide protected operating system files (recommended)'.

Find and delete each of the following. If you can't delete an item, right-click it and click properties. Make sure 'read-only' is unchecked.
If you still can't delete something, right-click it and rename it to a random word. Then drag the item to a different location. Try deleting it now. If you still can't, be sure to let me know.

Delete the following files/folders in bold

C:\WINDOWS\system32\nethi.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wingg.exe
C:\WINDOWS\cywgb.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nethi.exe

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

Step 5:

Copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad.
Name the file as fix.reg
Change the Save as Type to All Files
Save this file on the desktop

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\LEGACY_<insertservicename>]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\11F#`I]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_11F#`I]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SE]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SW]

Then double-click on the fix.reg file, and when it prompts to merge say yes, and this will clear some registry entries left behind by the process.

Step 6:

This is the step where we will use About:Buster that you had downloaded previously.

Navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory and double-click on aboutbuster.exe When the tool is open press the OK button, then the Start button, then the OK button, and then finally the Yes button.
It will start scanning your computer for files.
If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.

When it completed move on to step 7.

Step 7:
Reboot your computer back to normal mode so that we can restore files that were deleted by this infection:
  • This infection deletes the windows file, shell.dll.

please download shell.dll from here: shell-dll.zip. Once the file is downloaded uncompress the zip file and copy shell.dll to the following locations (%windir% being the windows or winnt directory):

    %windir%\system32
    %windir%\system

  • Download the Hoster from here. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.
This will restore the original deleted Hosts file.

  • If you have Spybot S&D installed you will also need to replace one file. Go here: SDHelper.zip and download SDHelper.dll. Copy the file to the folder containing you Spybot S&D program (normally C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy). Then click Start > Run > regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SDHelper.dll" and press the OK button
Step 8:

Run an online antivirus scan at:

http://housecall.antivirus.com/

Reboot and post a Hijackthis log

Sorry - I haven't gotten very far.

When I reboot in safe mode all my icons and fonts are HUGE and I can't navigate very well. I went to control Panel /Display and changed my icons to normal but to no avail. They are still huge. Can you tell me how to fix this and perhaps it'll be esaier to proceed?

Also, when I double clicked on Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper, the stop button was grayed out so I could not proceed as instructed. I went ahead and hit control-alt-delete to look for the two proceses you listed and my computer froze.

Anyway, if you'll tell me how to make everything look more normal in safe mode so I can navigate, I'll try again.

Hello donnakay12,

Refer to this site:
http://www.worldstart.com/tips/tips.php/1471

I double clicked on Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper, the stop button was grayed out so I could not proceed as instructed.

Lets try this to remove the service. Then proceed with the rest of the steps in the fix.

Part 1

Click Start>Run, type services.msc into the Open editbox and click the Ok button.

Locate the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper service and double-click on it to open the Properties dialog.

Click the Stop button.

In the Startup type dropdown select Disabled.

Click the Apply button and then the Ok button.

Close the Services window

Part 2

Click Start>Run, type cmd into the Open editbox and click the Ok button.

Copy/paste the line below into the Command Prompt window and press the Enter key:
sc delete 11F#`I

Close the Command Prompt window

Okay, sorry to be a pain but I can't get anywhere. It appears that the problem with me navigating in safe mode is the resolution of my monitor. Even if I change the icons & fonts, everything looks huge because I'm seeing a blown up version of the screen. I can't see all the options on my "start" menu and "run" is one of the ones I can't see.

I went to a support site for Windows XP and walked through the steps to increase my resolution. However, in safe mode, I cannot change the resolution. All the things I need to change are grayed out. It is fine in normal mode.

Any ideas on how to fix this or can any of these things be done in normal mode?

If you go to Control Panel - Display - Settings is the screen area set to greater than 640 x480? If not, can you change it?

Are the colours set to greater than 16? If not, can you change this?

If you go to Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click System, click Hardware, and then click Device Manager.
3. Click the PLUS SIGN to expand Display Adapters

Is there a yellow exclamation mark next to Display Adapter?
.

This may help you with the settings:

Okay, I don't think I've done much good but here goes nothing.

I finally managed to change the resolution on my computer. I got through Step 1.
Step 2 I did nothing because I didn't see those processes.
Step 3 & 4 were fine but one question. You said to delete several files and listed this one twice:
C:\\WINDOWS\system32\nethi.exe
Should there have been two? I only had one and deleted it.

Step 5 was bogus - I couldn't do it. I tried many times. Each time I'd go to save that stuff in Notepad, my keyboard and mouse would fail. I never could save the file.

Step 6 was fine.

Step 7, I had several problems:
First, the link you gave me for the Hoster didn't open anything on my computer.
I could not replace the file in S&D. I had a message which read "LoadLibrary failed. The specfied module could not be found."

Step 8 - I could not run the virus scan. Tried 3 timed. Each time I had the error "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close."

Here's my new log, for what it's worth.

Hello donnakay12,

You could not run TrendMicro becuase CWS infection was still active on your computer.

I know this is very frustrating for you, but hang in there and we will kill this infection. :flowers:

It is time for a CWS fix courtesy of SirJon. This fix is long, but has been quite successful. :trumpet:

PLEASE PRINT OUT THESE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE PROCEEDING.
(Click on Print this topic in the upper RH corner.)

STEP 1:
Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here.

STEP 2:
Please download Trend Micro CWShredder here.
Save it to its own folder named CWShredder and place it at the root of your C:\drive along with HijackThis.
Don't run it yet, we will use it later.

STEP 3:
Download AboutBuster from RubbeR DuckY here
Save it to its own folder named AboutBuster and place it at the root of your C:\drive along with HijackThis.
Double-click AboutBuster.exe and press Update to make sure you have the latest reference file version.
NOTE: You might want to view this AboutBuster tutorial here first before running the tool.
Don't run it yet, we will use it later.

STEP 4:
Download and install the latest version of Ad-Aware SE here
NOTE: If you are still using the older Ad-Aware 6, go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall it now before installing Ad-Aware SE.
Please configure the program by following these instructions here.
Before scanning click on "Check for updates now" to make sure you have the latest reference file.
Don't run it yet, we will use it later.

STEP 5:
Download the eScan Antivirus Toolkit here.
Save it to the desktop. This program is 10MB in size.
Don't run it yet, we will use it later.

STEP 6:
Download and install the Ewido Security Suite
NOTE: The Ewido Security Suite utility will not install on Windows 95, 98, ME, or NT. The minimum system requirements for Ewido Security Suite is: Windows 2000 or Windows XP. 1.) Download and install the Ewido Security Suite here
2.) Double-click on the new e Ewido shortcut on the desktop to open the program.
3.) On the upper LH side column, click on the Update button.
(This will update the program with all the latest signature files.)
Don't run it yet, we will use it later.
STEP 7:
If you are using Windows 2000 or XP, you must first STOP and DISABLE the rogue service:
There are different Display Names to look for:
  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper
Go to Start => Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then click Ok. 1.) Scroll down and find the bad services described above: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper
2.) When you find it, double-click on it.
3.) In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on Properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled.
4.) Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.
STEP 8:
If you are using Windows 2000 or XP, copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad. Name the file as cwsresfix.reg. Change the Save as Type to All Files, Save this file on the desktop. Please DO NOT include the word QUOTE when saving the file.

STEP 9:
Please reboot into Safe Mode. For instructions click here
Get into Safe Mode using the F8 Key on your keyboard:1.) Locate the F8 key on your keyboard and then reboot your PC. (Start, Shutdown, Restart)
2.) As soon as the monitor screen goes black, immediately start tapping the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
3.) Select the option for Safe Mode using the up down arrow keys.
4.) Then press Enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.
5.) Perform all the cleaning tasks here and when you are done, reboot PC back into normal mode (Windows).
STEP 10:
From Safe Mode, double-click on cwshredder.exe to open it, click the 'Fix->' button (not 'Scan Only') and you'll be prompted that CWShredder will shutdown any Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player windows, click OK to continue and let it run completely to delete anything it finds. After its scan, click Next, then Exit.

STEP 11:
From Safe Mode, browse to C:\AboutBuster and double click on aboutbuster.exe. 1.) Click Begin Removal and allow the program to run.
2.) After AboutBuster has finished click OK. It will now open a new page, click on the Protection tab and follow the instructions for protection on that page.
3.) Now click Exit and then click OK to the Logfile created dialog box.
STEP 12:
From Safe Mode, run the eScan Antivirus Toolkit. Please follow these instructions:1.) Double-click on the mwav.exe file saved to the desktop. A WinZip Self-Extractor will appear.
2.) Click Unzip, by default it will extract all the program files to new folder called Kaspersky at the root of the C:\drive. (C:\Kaspersky).
3.) A dialog box stating "1xx file(s) unzipped successfully" will appear, click OK. After clicking ok, the eScan AntiVirus Toolkit Utility interface will appear.
4.) With the eScan interface on your desktop, make sure that the boxes under Scan Option, Memory, Registry, Startup Folders, System Folders, Services, are all checked.
5.) Check the Drive box, this will create a another Drive box below it, check this second Drive box as well, now a large window across from the second Drive box appears. In this window use the drop-down arrow and choose the drive letter of your hard drive, usually C:\.
6.) Below these boxes, make sure the box Scan All Files is checked, not Program Files.
7.) Click the Scan Clean button and let the utility run until it completes a thorough scan of your hard drive. eScan will delete any viruses or trojans it finds.
8.) When the scan has finished, the top window will read Scan Completed. To close the interface, click OK, click Exit, then click Exit again.
STEP 13:
From Safe Mode, run the Ewido Security Suite.
NOTE: Windows 2000 and XP only. 1.) Double-click on the e Ewido shortcut on the desktop to open the program.
2.) On the upper LH side column, click on Scanner.
3.) Click the Settings button, under What to scan? click Scan every file, click OK.
4.) Click the Complete System Scan button.
5.) Have the program delete everything it finds.
STEP 14:
From Safe Mode, run the Ad-Aware SE program you downloaded and configured earlier, make sure "Perform full system scan" is checked, let it scan the hard drive and delete all entries it finds. Run the program again a second time.

STEP 15:
From Safe Mode, double-click on the cwsresfix.reg you created earlier and when it prompts to merge say yes, and this will clear some registry entries left behind by the process. Now reboot the PC back into Normal Mode (Windows).

STEP 16:
Go to Start, Run, type in %temp% click OK.
Click Edit, Select All, click File, Delete, now click Yes to send items to Recycle Bin. Now empty Recycle Bin.

STEP 17:
For Windows XP, it will be found here:
  • C:\Windows\System32
  • C:\Windows\System
Now look for the control.exe file.
For Windows XP it will be found here:
  • C:\Windows\System32
If any of these files are missing in 2000 or XP, they can be replaced from the dllcache folder.
For Windows 2000, a replacement can be found here:
  • C:\WINNT\System32\dllcache
For Windows XP, a replacement can be found here:
  • C:\Windows\System32\dllcache
Now copy and paste the file(s) from the dllcache folder into the proper folder (shown above) according to your version of Windows.

The files shell.dll and control.exe can also be downloaded. They can be downloaded from here.
Once the file(s) are downloaded extract the file(s) and copy them into the proper folder (shown above) according to your version of Windows.

Okay, I'm finished. A few notes:

At Step 11, it recommended installing Mozilla Firefox and Spyware Blaster but I could not install them.

Step 13: it skipped some files. Is that normal?

Step 16: 2 files could not be deleted. They are "Perflib_Perfdata_4dc.dat" and "Perflib_Perfdata_414.dat"

Everything else went fine. But now my Norton Internet security is gone and my Internet Explorer is gone!

Hello donnakay12,

At Step 11, it recommended installing Mozilla Firefox and Spyware Blaster but I could not install them.

That is OK.

Step 13: it skipped some files. Is that normal?

Did you tell Ewdio to "Scan every file" and click OK?
It should have scanned everything. Do you know what files it skipped?

Step 16: 2 files could not be deleted. They are "Perflib_Perfdata_4dc.dat" and "Perflib_Perfdata_414.dat"

That is OK. Just leave them.
These files are generated by processes in the normal course of operation; however, files are orphaned when you do not shut down a computer properly, such as by pressing the power button on a computer

But now my Norton Internet security is gone and my Internet Explorer is gone!

Do you mean the icon for Norton Internet security? Or the Norton Internet security programs? I see the Norton programs in you log, so it looks like they are still there.
I would reinstall your Norton Internet security.

For IE6 try this:
Click start and run and type "iexplore".
that will open internet explorer and prove it's not gone.
You actually can't delete IE very easily so it's probably there.
To get the shortcut back just click start, search, all files and folders and then type Internet Explorer.
Then it'll come up with a few things, one of them showing the blue E. just right click on that one and hit send to->desktop.

*******************************************

How to Reboot into Safe Mode
tap F8 key during reboot, until the boot menu appears...use the arrow keys to choose "Safe Mode" from the menu......,then press the "Enter" key.

Please boot into Safe Mode and select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix.
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O15 - Trusted IP range: 64.127.104.144
O16 - DPF: {9522B3FB-7A2B-4646-8AF6-36E7F593073C} (cpbrkpie Control) - http://a19.g.akamai.net/7/19/7125/4047/ftp...23/cpbrkpie.cab

*******************************************

Let's empty the temp files:

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best).
Select the Windows Tab, Run CCleaner ,(click Run Cleaner (bottom right) then, when it finishes scanning click Exit.)
When you see "Complete" on the top line, it's done. It's very fast.

I recommend that you DO NOT run anything under the Issues Tab and the Applications Tab. To prevent accidently running the Issues Tab and Applicatons tabs, clear all check boxes are under them.

*******************************************

Finally, reboot and post a new Hijackthis log, and tell me how your computer is running.

I don't know which files Ewdio skipped. I did tell it to scan all files.

My Norton Internet Security is there but it doesn't "turn on" automatically now. I tried to change the settings and it won't take any of my changes.

My IE icon is still there. If I double click it I get this:

"Windows cannot find iexplore.exe.
This program file is needed for opening files of typre "File".
Type in the executable file to be used instead."

I fixed the lines you reccomended in HijackThis.

I could not download CCleaner. When I click on the link you gave me, nothing happens.

Here's a new log:
